Rhodes: Dorothy Gwen – March 1,1918 to April 28, 2011. Dorothy was born in Davidson, Saskatchewan to Ernest and Susan Holder. Her family farmed there, moving to Sidney, BC in 1922 to continue farm work on the now heritage Glamorgan Farm.
Dorothy gradutated from Grade 13 Senior Matriculation in Duncan, BC and continued her education at Sprott Shaw Business School in Victoria which led to her employment as a reporter for the West Coast Advocate in Port Alberni.
Dorothy met her beloved husband, Lorne in Port Alberni and they lived for 55 years in Lorne’s family home that he had helped build at the age of 17.
Dorothy accompanied Lorne on his commercial fishing troller, the Karen N, for the last 8 years he fished and loved being with him on the water. She used her photographic skills to capture many West Coast scenes, some of which Lorne later painted and others became photo albums which gave her much pleasure in her later years.
Dorothy worked with love and dedication in several capacities through the years with the United Church in Port Alberni and later the Cedar Grove Reformed Church in Port Alberni.
The last 8 years of Dorothy’s life were spent at the Dwelling Place care facility in Nanaimo. Her family wish to express their very deep gratitude for the loving care Dorothy received. She was very happy there and was cherished , as everywhere, for her gentle ways and ready smile.
Predeceased by her husband Lorne, sister Mildred and brother Clinton. Dorothy is survived by daughters: Sylvia Taylor (John), Maureen Gresham (Gil) and Helen Reinhardt (Wayne);grandchildren: James Taylor and Sheryl Fitzell, Kevin and Rosalind Gresham, David (Lori), Peter and Steven (Patti) Reinhardt as well as 6 great grandchildren and other relatives and friends.
A Funeral Service will be held on Thursday, May 5, 2011 at 1:30pm at the 7th Day Adventist Church, 4109 Kendal St, Port Alberni with Rev. Bill Hudson officiating.
