It was my honor  and privilege to serve as Doc's guardian  on the WW II honor flight on September 25, 2012.  He was such a delightful, interesting and humble  person to spend the  day with touring veteran memorials around Washington, DC. His recall of difficult assignments while serving in Europe were told in such detail that I felt like I was walking with him , yet he was so humble about his WW II service for our country.  Doc, thank you for  a memorable day , thank you for your service to our country and our South Mississippi community. May you enjoy the eternal rest that you so well deserve. Vernon was my favorite uncle. I am so glad he stayed in touch after mom's sister Dee passed away.I  will remember the twinkle in his eye and how upbeat he alwayd was. He and my dad fished a lot together. His best friend (significant other) Marty is a wonderfull woman. My sisters and I have been talking with her on the phone. Vern cared a lot for her. Vernon was a WWII Darby Ranger. He fought in the European Campaign.  After the 1st and 3rd Bn were captured (Vernon was in the 4th Bn) he was transfered to Special Forces. He was in the Devils Brigade.  For those that do not know about the Rangers, they were an elite fighting group.  The Darby Rangers success led to the activation of the 2nd, 5th, and 6th Bns. He was active in the WWII Ranger Association. Vernon and his companion Marty attended many WWII Ranger reunions. Vernon was a wonderful man and I was fortunate to meet him and call him my friend.    We will all miss him.

You will be missed do much.  I remember how you I was so shy after mom died I had to go live with your mom and her mom. You would tiggle me so much to make me laugh.  Even after I was grown up you and Dee were always there for me.  I will miss the pictures of you that you always sent in the most beautiful cards I ever received, they were so uplifting.
