Sarah Carter Schaen Naugher, age 96, passed away on Friday, November 16, 2018 at Sanctuary Hospice House in Tupelo. She was born July 19, 1922 in Canton, MS to Hamlet Robinson Carter, Sr. and Elizabeth Mansell Carter. Sarah graduated from Pontotoc High School in 1940 and MUW with her Bachelor’s degree in 1944, she obtained her Masters of Education from MSU in 1972. She was a teacher, having taught in most all of the schools in Pontotoc County and ending her career at the Pontotoc Vo-Tech, where she taught Business Education. She was a homemaker, farmer and bookkeeper. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Pontotoc for 82 years, the American Legion Auxiliary for 78 years, Friends of the Library, VFW, DAR, Retired Teachers, Pontotoc County Historical Society and the MS Chapter of the Veterans of Battle of the Bulge. Her hobbies were reading, history, the library and the Pontotoc County Historical Museum and was an avid MSU Bulldog fan, attending many sporting events through the years.
Services will be at 2:00 PM, on Monday, November 19, 2018 at Browning Funeral Home Chapel in Pontotoc, MS, with Dr. Ken Hester officiating; burial will follow in the Ebenezer Cemetery. Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her daughter, Jima Schaen Sparks (Steve), of Gaffney, SC; two sons, Jon David Naugher (Betsy), of Pontotoc, MS and Carter Naugher (Leigh) of Amory, MS; eight grandchildren, Adam Brumfield (Christa), Leah Brumfield Russell (Steve), David Brumfield, Sarah Burrell (Jamie), Carly Naugher, Belle Naugher, Pinson Naugher (Stephanie) and Kate Crittenden (Ben); eleven great-grandchildren, two special friends, Martha Stewart and Judge Fred Wicker; and her special caregivers, Johnnie Lewis and Swanna Johnson.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husbands, 1st Lt. James William Schaen and David Naugher; an infant son; granddaughter, Nancy Catherine Naugher Young; and two brothers, H.R. Carter, Jr., and Howard Franklin Carter.
Pallbearers will be Adam Brumfield, David Brumfield, Pinson Naugher, Jamie Burrell, Ben Crittenden and Gage Davis. Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. Steve Montgomery, Mickey Williams, Greg Hall, David Hall and Kippy Kemp.
Visitation will be from 11:30 AM to 2 PM Monday at the funeral home.
