Mittie Moore Jones Simms, age 89, died Saturday, March 15, 2014. She was the wife of Dr. B.T. Simms, Jr. for 66 years. She was born June 14, 1924 to Dr. Benjamin Franklin Jones and Katie Belle Tate Jones. She graduated from Auburn High School and earned her Bachelor’s degree in Interior Design from Auburn University in 1944, then her Master’s Degree in Education from the University of MS in 1976. She taught Fine Arts at Auburn while her husband was in Veterinary School and later taught reading at South Pontotoc Elementary. She was a member of the First Baptist Church in Pontotoc where she served as the church pianist, she also served as pianist at Green Valley Baptist Church for several years. She was a member of the Pontotoc Music Study Club, a past Regent of the Pontotoc Hills Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution and the Pontotoc Historical Society. She designed the Pontotoc afghan for the Historical Society fundraiser as well as pen and ink drawings of six historical sites in Pontotoc for the Historical Society notecards.
Services will be at 11 AM Wednesday, March 19, 2014 at the First Baptist Church in Pontotoc with Dr. Ken Hester officiating; burial will be in the Pontotoc Memorial Gardens. Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her husband; her daughter: Susan Simms Weatherholt (Richard Thomas Weatherholt) of Brandon, MS; her son: Bennett Thomas Simms, III, of Pensacola, FL; one sister: Kate Brown, Greenville, AL; three grandchildren: Whitney Susan Weatherholt of Pontotoc, MS, Courtney Simms Weatherholt, of Brandon, MS and Annaliese Elizabeth Simms Cothron (Matthew) of San Antonio, TX; two great-great grandchildren: Kelsie Leanne Cothron and McCartney Rose Cothron; and her caregivers: Linda Pinson, Tonya Green, Earma Satterwhite, Whitney Weatherholt and Janice Woodruff.
She was preceded in death by her parents.
Pallbearers will be: Tommy Patterson, Tommy Wood, Jimmy Wise, George Stegall, Billy Montgomery and Ellis Reeder.
Visitation will be at the First Baptist Church on Tuesday from 5 to 7 PM and on Wednesday from 10 to 11 AM.
