Leighton Benjamin was born on August 23, 1928 to Reverend Charlie Alvis Benjamin and Estelle Graham Benjamin. Leighton passed away on January 1, 2016 at Baptist Memorial Hospital in Oxford. He was a Methodist and accepted Christ at an early age. He enjoyed farming, running a Caterpillar, operating other heavy equipment and playing with his grandchildren. He served the county of Pontotoc as 2nd District Supervisor for two terms. He is preceded in death by his father, Charlie Alvis Benjamin, his mother, Estelle Graham Benjamin, and his first wife Wava Hunter Benjamin and two special Uncles, Thurmond Montgomery and Dudley Benjamin. He is survived by his current wife, Katherine Bishop Benjamin, one son, Charles (Randy) Benjamin, two daughters: Vicky Benjamin Dyer, and Yvonne Benjamin Smith all of Pontotoc, MS, seven grandchildren, and twelve great grandchildren. He is also survived by his sisters: Sara Benjamin Garrett of New Albany, Clarice Benjamin Burchfield and Sammie Benjamin Wilemon both of Memphis, TN, Martha Benjamin Brunner of Iuka, MS, and by two special brothers-in-law, J. P. Garrett and Dan Thompson; and many Nieces and Nephews. He is also survived by five step-children: Wayne, Billy, Charles, Randy Bishop, and Brenda Lewis all of Oxford,MS.
Pallbearers are Danny Benjamin, Lanny Benjamin, Damon Cooke, Dan Thompson, Calvin Young and Reggie Collums. Honorary Pallbearers are: J.P. Garrett, Tranny Montgomery and Richard Lawrence.
Visitation will be at Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc, Sunday, January 3, from 2:00 to 4:00 PM. Services will be held at Browning Funeral Home Chapel in Pontotoc at 2:00 pm on Monday, January 4th, 2016 with Bro. Raymond Aven officiating. Burial will follow in Sands Springs Cemetery. Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.
