Helen Sue Hamilton Pitts, age 96, passed away Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at her residence. She was born February 21, 1920 to Luther Martin Hamilton, Sr., and Mary Essie Moody Hamilton. She attended Memphis State, University of Mississippi and received her teaching degree from Blue Mountain College. She taught at Beckham, Ingomar, Macedonia and North Pontotoc, retiring after 31 years of teaching. She was a member of Ecru Baptist Church, the “Goodtimers”, Woodmen of the World, and the Pontotoc County Retired Teachers. She was very passionate about maintaining her yard and flower gardening.
Services will be at 11 AM Saturday, January 7, 2017 at Ecru Baptist Church with Rev. Greg Lassett and Bush Hamilton officiating: burial will follow in the Ecru Cemetery. Browning Funeral Home in Pontotoc is in charge of the arrangements.
Survivors include her daughter, Mary Catherine “Cathy” Duncan and husband Albert Ray Duncan of New Albany, MS; a brother, Luther Hamilton, Jr., of Jackson, MS; a daughter-in-law: Rita Pitts Biffle of Biloxi, MS; two grandsons, Ben Pitts and wife Sasha of Sherman, MS and Len Pitts and wife Melinda of Randolph, MS; three great-grandchildren, Alexis Pitts, Elizabeth Pitts and Benjamin Pitts and several nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband of 65 years, Sam Gates Pitts, Sr., a son, Sam Gates Pitts, Jr., and a sister, Margie Ann Hamilton.
Pallbearers will be Donald Andrews, Bush Hamilton, James Farris, Johnny Mounce, Justin McMillen, Chad Stubblefield and Jimmy Young.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7 PM Friday and from 10 to 11 AM Saturday. All the visitation will be at Ecru Baptist Church.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be sent to the Ecru Baptist Church Building Fund, P.O. Box 467, Ecru, MS 38841.
