Marjorie Lee was born in Broughton, Westmoreland, Jamaica to Thomas and Hetta Heron on October 21, 1930, and grew up with her older siblings Linda (Lyn) and Gerald and nephew Rudoph (all of whom have predeceased her). Her adopted sister Elaine later joined the household. After graduating school she began teaching at the Paul Island Primary School, where she took pleasure in riding her bicycle to work several miles everyday. In her spare time, she helped to take care of her young nephew Tyrone and niece Barbara until they migrated to America to be with their parents Lyn and Leon Kirlew. She also enjoyed “understudying” her mother (affectionately called aunt Hetta) who was a seamstress known for her epic singing, recitations and baking delicious cakes.
However Marjorie had other plans to escape the little district of Broughton. She was accepted to study at Buxton College in the capital city Kingston. She happily went off and boarded with her brother Gerald. Her parents would send food and other supplies every month from home over 120 miles on a
“country” truck.
Having conquered the frontier of the capital city Kingston, Marjorie’s sights were set even further afield, this time overseas to the “motherland”. Her friend “Wenkie” who was studying nursing in England encouraged her to join her. That was all she needed. She packed her bags and away she went to England to pursue a career in nursing. She continued this career until her retirement.
Soon after, she met and married Alvin Lee and they had 3 children, Judith, Colin & Jennifer. She worked at several hospitals while raising her family.
Marjorie was to make yet another journey. This time her sister Lyn persuaded her to move to America. And this she did. She settled in the Bronx and worked in several hospitals. She worked at the “Hebrew Hospital for the Chronic Sick” for many years until her retirement. She moved to Boca Raton Florida where she lived until her passing.
She enjoyed life going on many trips across the US. But none like cruising with friends and family to many destinations over many years. Marjorie is survived by her daughter Judith, son Colin, grandson Jelani, adopted sister Elaine, nieces, nephews, grand & great grand nieces/nephews, other relatives and close friends. She was predeceased by her husband, Alvin and daughter, Jennifer
