Called Peggy by her friends, she was born Margaret Louise Wheeler to her loving parents, Thomas and Louise Booth Wheeler and older brother Edwin Booth on January 17, 1926. She grew up in an area called Poquonick Bridge Village, a part of Groton, Connecticut. She was a happy child and soon had 2 younger sisters Ethel and then Vivian to play with.
Summers were the best because they went to Grandma Wheeler's summer house, which was right on Misquamicut Beach in Rhode island. She had babysat neighbors children during High School where she learned to type so she could find secretarial work when she graduated. She graduated from Fitch High School.
She met Elwell Brooker Thomas, who owned the Thomas Boat Yard & Livery in Stonington, Ct. They were married August 7, 1948. They worked together in the Boatyard. In 1959 they sold the Boatyard and in 1960 piloted their houseboat down the inner coastal waterway to Fort Lauderdale, Florida. They lived at 733 N.E. Terrace in Ft. Lauderdale where Peggy became a member at the First Baptist Church of Fort Lauderdale. She loved singing in the choir and especially loved singing in their Christmas pageants.
In 1976, Elwell became ill and died and Peggy went to work for an insurance company.
She later met Robert Dowell, a widower and they were married in about 1991 or 1992. Peggy moved to his home at Leisure Gardens Condos at 1481 South ocean Blvd. and bought the Condo from him. Robert Dowell died in July of 1998 and Peggy was alone again.
In 2002, Peggy married her third husband, David York. They traveled to many places together including Washington State and even Jamaica.
They were very happy. David had taught music in a college in New Jersey and he also wrote music. David died January 16, 2010 and Peggy was alone again. She had many friends and was loved by those that knew her.
She will be greatly missed.
