John M (Jack) Miller, born and raised in Gnadenhutten, Ohio, passed away on August 24, 2017. Born February 18th in 1924, he attended school there and graduated in the class of 1941. Upon graduation he enrolled as an engineering student at The Ohio State University. Soon after WWII started in December 1941 Jack enlisted in the Army Air Corps as an Aviation Cadet and received his commission as a 2nd Lt and pilot’s wings in August 1943, at age l9. He was mustered out of the Army in October of 1945 and immediately enrolled at Kent State University as a Psychology major and was graduated with a B.S. degree in 1948. About a year prior to his graduation, September 6th, 1947, Jack married the lovely Mercedes Lydia Sanchez in the John Heckewelder Moravian Church in Gnadenhutten. After graduation from KSU John (formerly called Jack) entered The University of Colorado in Boulder,Colorado as a graduate student in Psychology.
In November 1948 the first of four children was born to Mercedes and John in Socorro, New Mexico, where her father was Chairman of the Mathematics Dept. at the New Mexico School of Mines. In 1949 the couple found that it was necessary to find work for John and he took a position as Principal of a small High School in Pueblo, Colorado. The following year the family moved to Ohio where John continued his work in the public schools. However this was ended when John was recalled to active duty as a USAF pilot, in which capacity he remained until 1969 when he retired as a Major. During his time of active duty, three more children were born, two boys and a girl. John had many varied assignments including several overseas tours, one of which was South East Asia during the Viet Nam conflict. On a more peaceful note, John had assignments as professor of Aerospace Studies at University of Cincinnati (where he earned a Master’s Degree) and at what is now Texas A&M University at Commerce.
Upon retirement John accepted an appointment as Assistant Professor at Miami Dade Community College (now known as Miami Dade College) from which he retired in 1989 as Professor. Mercedes also accepted a position at the college and has retired as Assistant Director of Financial Aid. They lived for many years in Hollywood, Florida and in 2001 moved in to a Continuing Care Retirement Facility, (John Knox Village) in Pompano Beach, FL.
In addition to the four children, Mercedes and John had eleven grandchildren, three great granddaughters and two great grandsons. Mercedes was born in Puerto Rico to Dr. and Mrs. Rafael Sanchez, an only child. She holds a Bachelor of Arts Degree from Kent State University. John’s parents were Ed and Lucy Miller. He had one sister, Jane Marie Miller Wheeler.
