Eric Cyrus

Eric was born in Kingston, Jamaica on January 6th, 1935 to Leonard and Iona Cyrus. He attended Kingston Technical High School and then furthered his education at Knockalva Technical College where he studied Drafting and Architecture. Upon graduation in 1954, he started his career at the Ministry of Education as a Draftsman. Over his 25 year career with the Ministry, he rose to the position of Building Officer where he supervised the construction of schools throughout Jamaica. In 1955, Eric met Eva Gordon Stewart, who he married on December 3rd, 1960. The union produced two children, Eric, Jr. and Michelle. The family resided in Harbour View from 1960 to 1975, after which they moved to their current home in Red Hills. In 1978, Eric resigned from the Ministry of Education and joined his wife in the family’s retail businesses, Harbour View Hardware and Zenith Hardware, until they were sold in 2005 when he and his wife retired.

Eric was devoted to Community Service and was a very active member of the Kiwanis Club of Eastern Kingston and Port Royal for over 35 years, where he served as Secretary, Treasurer and Distinguished President. He also earned the honor of Kiwanian of the Year, on two separate occasions, for his exemplary service to his club, and the communities it serves.

Eric is survived by his loving wife Eva, son Eric, Jr., daughter Michelle, son-in-law Barry, daughter-in-law Ruth, grandchildren Roslyn, Eric, III and Jason, brothers George, Richard and Patrick and sisters Peggy, Jean, Jenny and Rita, as well as numerous cousins, nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Leonard and Iona, brother Kenneth and sisters Merlene, Gloria, Daphne, Dahlia, Cynthia and Madge.

Eric loved, and was loved in return, by his family and friends and received tremendous joy from entertaining them as often as he could. He truly enjoyed socializing with his many friends and family members, and lived a full vibrant life right up to his passing.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to The Kiwanis Club of Lauderdale Lakes for an educational scholarship to be named in honor of Eric Cyrus Sr..
