SMITH, EDWIN D. (SMITTY), Pompano Beach Skate Arena owner and operator passed away at age 93 on June 27, 2013. He was born on November 14, 1919 to Charles and Lulu Smith. He was predeceased in death by his wife Virginia on January 1, 2009. He leaves three children, Dennis C. of Plantation, Florida,. Terry (Terrence) of Erie, PA and daughter Jennifer Sovak-Smith of Wilmington, NC, seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.“Smitty” wore all the hats at the Skate Arena. He drove a 60 passenger school bus for parties for school and church groups. Summer recreation was his busiest time and mornings and afternoons he picked up school groups from 1968 until 1980. The rink was sold in the 1990's but the building was eventually destroyed by hurricane “Wilma”. He served in the U.S. Army in World War II. He was a life member of the Erie Maennerchor Club in Erie, PA. A funeral mass will be said 9:30 am on Friday, July 19, 2013 at St. Paul The Apostle Catholic Church in Lighthouse Point,Florida for friends and family members. Smitty and his wife Virginia’s cremated remains will be buried together in South Florida National Cemetery in Lake Worth, Fl. In lieu of flowers please make donations to Hospice By The Sea.
