May 22, 1949 – May 23, 2018
“The supreme quality for leadership is unquestionably integrity.”
Charles Joseph (Chuck) Meyer died on May 23, 2018 in Pompano Beach, FL after a prolonged battle with cancer. He had just turned 69.
Mr. Meyer was born on May 22, 1949 in Sheboygan, Wisconsin to his parents, Charles L. Meyer and Elaine Engle Meyer. His family moved to south Florida in 1952. He graduated from Ft. Lauderdale High School, Home of the “Flying L’s” in 1967. He attended one year at Broward Community College after serving as Staff Sergeant E-5 in the U.S. Air Force from 1967-1971. During his years in the Air Force working as Administrative Personnel, he served one year in Viet Nam at Cam Ranh Bay assigned to the Wing Commander. He also was stationed at the 731st Radar Squadron in Sundance, Wyoming in charge of documenting the shut-down of that site. Upon his Honorable Discharge from the Air Force in 1971, he returned to south Florida where he married Marcia Sanscrainte Meyer in 1972. The Meyers have lived in the Pompano/Ft. Lauderdale area ever since, raising three children here, where Chuck was actively involved in their children’s school and athletic activities. Chuck was one of the original founding committee members of the St. Coleman Annual Italian Festival and was active with the Festival for over 10 years.
Mr. Meyer’s career in the HVAC industry spanned over 45 years. Upon his return from the Air Force, he immediately began to study for the A/C Contractor’s Exam and got his Broward County Class B Air Conditioning Contractors License in 1974. He went on to get his State of Florida Class A Unlimited Air Conditioning Contractors License in 1978. His first company, Electro Mechanical Contractors (1973-1980) had it’s humble beginnings with the installation of underground cable and HVAC equipment in over 500 homes in three brand new mobile home parks, with the help of his then high school aged brother in law, Craig. From there he moved onto residential new construction and service. From 1980 to 1996, Chuck was the Vice President and General Manager at Florida Heating and Air Conditioning. In 1996, Florida Heating & Air Conditioning was consolidated and became American Residential Services of Florida. With ARS, he became the State Certified Contractor and Qualifier for all nine companies in Florida and was responsible for all New Construction Contracting in the state of Florida. In 2006, Chuck was able to bring the original company back to a private enterprise once again as Engineered Air, LLC. From which he retired in 2011.
For two years after that he was busy with his new company GOODNCOOL, INC. as a HVAC Business Consultant for the HVAC Industry. In January 2013, he rejoined the work-force in the HVAC business at East Coast Mechanical in Boynton Beach as Installation Manager for the Replacement Division dealing with residential service and system replacement.
His many years of experience in the HVAC field, both on the business side and working in the field, combined with his years of mentoring so many young people in the business, culminated in Chuck finding a second career which he found to be the most rewarding yet. He became a State of Florida Certified Commercial Mechanical Inspector in the spring of 2017 and joined Calvin, Giordano & Associates where he worked among his peers in the HVAC industry and was able to bring his wealth of experience, and desire to teach the trade, to a whole new level.
Among his many recognized volunteer affiliations: From 1992-1996 Chuck was a member of the Builders Association of South Florida (BASF) and he was a member of the Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) from 1994-1999, serving as a member of the Board of Directors for two years. From 1987-2011, he was a member of the South Florida Air Conditioning Contractors Association (SFACA) where he was a member of the Board of Directors and served on various committees during that time. In 1998 Chuck was selected by Governor Lawton Chiles as a member of the Technical Committee on the Florida Building Code Commission to help formulate and develop the process of the current Florida Building Code. From 1990-2007 he served on the Broward County Board of Rules & Appeals Fire Code Committee. From 1995-2004, Chuck served on the Broward County Board of Rules & Appeals, serving as Vice Chairman in 1999 and Chairman of the Board in 2000. He also served on the Broward County Board of Rules & Appeals Mechanical Code Committee 1995-Present. Mr. Meyer was also currently serving on the Broward County Mechanical Contractors Licensing Board as a member since 2007, acting as Chairman of the Licensing Board in 2011.
The other great love of his life outside of his beautiful family was the ever-challenging game of golf.
