Algainesh is survived by her daughter, Joy Assefa, of Switzerland; her son, Ezana Assefa Tessema, of Nairobi Kenya; and her son, Henock Assefa, of New York, NY. She is preceded in death by her husband, Assefa Tessema, of Addis Abeba, Ethiopia; her brother, Ghermay Afewerk, of Asmara, Eritrea; her brother, Makonnen Afewerk, of Miami, FL; and her sister, Bisrat Afewerk, of Portland, Oregon.
Algainesh Afewerk was born on March 31st, 1939 in Asmara, Eritrea, to parents Afewerk Nemariam and Hanna Kassa. She graduated from Haile Selaisse University in 1968 with a degree in Advanced Secretarial Science and Office Management. In 1975,she moved to Rome, Italy and accepted a position as a Stenographer at the United Nations Agency for Food and Agriculture (FAO), where she worked for more than 24 years.
Algainesh was a great family woman, a caring and loving mother and grandmother. She married Assefa Tessema in 1965 and the couple had 3 children together.
Algainesh was a social, active woman who was deeply involved in child welfare and humanitarian causes for the majority of her life. She enjoyed spending time with her family,taking care of her pets, and knitting sweaters for her grandchildren. Her family and friends will always remember her as a sweet, generous, and loving person.
A funeral is scheduled for Algainesh Afewerk on October 1st, 2022, at Pompano City Cemetery 400 SE 23rd Ave, Pompano Beach, FL 33062 with a reception to follow at 3641 Oaks Clubhouse Dr 201, Pompano, FL 33069.
