Predeceased by her mother Naomi, and father Percy Shee; Diane was loving mother to Ron Berty (Wendy Shetler) & Dan Berty (Karen Cole), beloved sister to 5 brothers (Brian Shee, Kevin (dec), Neil (dec), Gary (dec), and Darrel), and amazing grandma to Scott (Alex), Shannon (Greg), Ryan (Claudia) and Megan Berty.
Growing up in NDG in a busy household as the only girl, she left a strong imprint on those she touched throughout her life. Attending St. Augustine’s and graduating in 1953 with many life-long friends, she went to the Grey Nun’s Mother House and graduated with an administrative assistant degree. From there to Alcan before she married Jack Berty and started a family. She was an active volunteer at St. Suzanne’s elementary school in Pierrefonds.
This led to becoming a commissioner for Baldwin Cartier School Board and eventually its Vice-Chair. She was instrumental in advocating for anglophone rights during Quebec’s tumultuous mid 70’s through the 80’s, presenting briefs to committees of the Quebec National Assembly. As her boys got older, she began working for the Grand Masons of Quebec as administrator and secretary to the Grand Master. She also was an active volunteer for many years at Stewart Hall in Pointe Claire.
For Diane, life was also about having fun! She loved visiting Newport Vermont with friends and family at what became known as the “Shee compound on the Bluffs”. She even briefly retired there part time and earned the nickname “Gramma Cottage” from her four grandchildren. Having learned “how” from her brothers, from the many parties there and in Montreal, where she would often lead a song of the Battle Hymn of the republic or dress up in a fun costume.
She was also an avid reader! She easily read 1,000+ books. She often read a 350-page book in 24 hours! So, it was no surprise she loved visiting the libraries in Montreal and in Newport and being part of book clubs.
Despite being diagnosed with Alzheimer’s in her later years she made many friends and was very happy at the Villa St. Louis and then at Chateau Pierrefonds. She loved both locations. Her final months were spent at CHSLD Bussey where, thanks to help from the caring staff there, she remained happy and active. Indeed, she was fittingly proclaimed Dutchess of the Carnival at the CHSLD just days before she left us.
Diane lived by setting an example. She led others, enjoyed vigorous debate, loved those around her unconditionally, was honest and when needed was direct, showed everyone around how to laugh and not take things too seriously, was a kidder but never to hurt or insult anyone. Mostly though, she taught those around her how to be a better person. She is missed deeply by family and friends but will live on in our hearts, memories, and actions.
Visitation will take will take place on Wednesday April 9th between at 2-4:40 pm with service to follow Collins Clarke MacGillivray White Funeral Home, 5610 Sherbrooke St W, Montreal, QC.
An Irish style wake will also be held for family and close friends at Typhoon Lounge (5752 Monkland Avenue) between 6:30 and 9pm.
In lieu of sending flowers, the family asks that a donation be made to the Canadian Alzheimer Society.
