Leah & Reed:  Chris and I offer our condolences. Your Dad was my coach on the Longhorns way back when. He started out as a coach but soon became a great friend. He created a great atmosphere to play hockey for fun, not just to win.  I have coached my kids and their friends hopefully living up to John's standards.  Although we live in Ontario, your Dad convinced me to come back to play in the Oldtimers tournament, and I'm glad he did.  I was able to reconnect with guys I hadn't seen in 35 + years!  Take Care we are thinking about you!

Reed and Leah, 
Please accept my deepest condolences.  Your father was a great man, and he touched the lives of countless Pointe Claire kids and adults alike.  He noticed the overflowing energy that I had as a child, and visited my parents, declaring "this kid needs to be on a sports team."  He offered to drive me to games, and to go shopping with me for my first hockey equipment.  Since then I learned how to be part of a team, and to play hard and fairly despite the odds - the most important thing was to do your best and to help others to do the same.  John taught kids how to live by those rules, with conviction.  He relished victories and he mocked defeat, as a state of mind. Life without John will not be the same, but he  lives on in the spirit of a generation of kids who were lucky enough to have him as a coach and friend.  
Reed and Leah, thanks for having shared him so much with the rest of us.

As one who grew up on St.Louis and was a friend of John, I am saddened to hear the news of his passing. On behalf of all my brothers, our thoughts and prayers go out to his family.

Dear John entered our lives when he taught our son in elementary school.  Without a doubt, John was one of the best teachers we met. 

He taught more than what was on the curriculum. John taught respect and motivation. He knew how to reach each of his students. And many of the parents too.

We were fortunate. Though baseball John stayed in our lives for many years.  I still hear his laugh, his humour and his stories.

It's going to be hard...John we will miss you immensely.

We are lucky ... you were part of our lives. Your sweet soul touched us deeply. Your memory will remain with us.

My sincere condolences to Reed and Leah. 

My son has told me that he didn’t really like school that much. Then,  in grade two, along came John Gilmore. Pretty soon, he loved school. John’s “money” earning plan for extra reading, extra story writing,  extra worksheets, quickly made my son a  millionaire. He bought his sister a beautiful tea set with his earnings. He loaned “ money” to other kids.
He loved the hockey card trading program.
In short, Mr. Gilmore was one of the people who had  an unforgettable impact on his life. 
As a parent, I will be eternally grateful that my son shared a year in John Gilmore’s classroom.

A LETTER FROM HEAVEN

We are grateful for countless hours shared with John and for so many happy memories, of special times in his company.  No couple could have asked for a better best man at their wedding.  It is hard to imagine our world without John.  We've known him for over fifteen years, and it feels like he has always been there.  We will miss his smile and his laugh.  We extend our heartfelt sympathies to Leah, Reed and to John's family, and we wish our dear friend a joyful welcome in heaven.

John and I grew up together, played hockey on his outdoor rink, football on the "little circle" and had the odd pop during his visits with Pam and I in Spruce Grove.  Baseball was John's passion. He saw a need for Senior baseball. And the L.S.B.L. was born.
As a teacher John touched the lives of 1000+ kids in Pointe Claire.  And maybe a few on the hockey rinks of St. Laurent. Never at a loss for words he gave those kids an alternative way of thinking.

Our sincere sympathies go to Leah, Reed and John's sister Patty.

May the Good Lord take care of you, John, as you Rest in Peace.


Sincere sympathy to Leah and Reed.  John was a larger-than-life man - always upbeat.  He loved the kids and his craft of teaching.  His classroom was filled with stories and laughter. 
I was his Administrator at both Northview and Jubilee.
We chatted about a month ago and he was inspiring- accepting of his situation and enjoying his time with both Reed and Leah.  
Thinking of you both as you say a final goodbye.

I have such fond memories of Mr. Gilmore as my grade 4 teacher at Allancroft (back in the 80's). He truly left such a great impression on me. My sincere condolences to his family and friends. May all of your happy memories of him comfort you during this difficult time.

Although I moved from Pointe Claire in 1973, I remember John & Patty and the house around the corner on Jervis Bay from our childhood and teenage years. My deepest condolences.

Mr. Gilmore taught my kids at Allancroft school in the late 80's.  I remember so clearly the spring day in 1989, the day after my hometown team the Calgary Flames defeated The Habs in Montreal to win the Stanley Cup.  Later that morning I walked into the school and ran into John wearing a red Flames jersey.  Brave brave man with a terrific sense of humor.  Gone to soon.  You will be missed.

Well, I'm truly saddened. What a great man. A leader by example, strait shooter bar none. Love you Leah and Reed. He has and will be always a big part in my life. Baseball, life and everything in between.

I first met Mr. Gilmore back when I decided to get back into baseball. He was always there to back you up as long as you made the effort. Baseball will not be the same without him running the show. RIP.

So very sorry to hear of the passing of your Dad.
He was always the first to offer a hand whenever anyone needed it.

In shock to hear about his passing. Mr.Gilmore was never my teacher but I knew him well. I believe it was him and Mr.Clavell that were our grade 4 teachers in open area at Seigniory elementary...in 1974-75. He was always kind and sincere. I would run into him later in life and we would talk like no time had passed. Always made you feel good after meeting with him. My sincere condolences you his children and family. He was an amazing man who had a profound impact on many, many lives. R.I.P. Mr.Gilmore.

I was in Mr. Gilmore's grade 4 class in 1993/94 at Northview.  He was always one of my favorite teachers.  I remember him being very kind, funny, and wanting to get the best from his students.  He will be missed, but his lessons live on :)

He always had an interesting story, and shared in a very entertaining way. He even stopped by our street party this past summer, and told stories about the neighborhood.  Mr. Gilmore taught my son for 2 years, and during that time, my boy learned to question things. I love how he taught kids to actually think. I often volunteered at the school, and have seen him many times since. He will be remembered.
