Roger was a devoted husband to his surviving wife, Valerie Elizabeth Roberts for over 60 years. He was a loving father to his daughters Linda Ackman-Newman (Daryl) and Susan Ackman. He was a cherished grandfather to his grandchildren Erica Newman-Boucher (Jean Francois) and Christopher Newman (Gillian Allan). Roger was predeceased by his father Frederick Douglas Ackman, his mother Cornelia Hayes-Ackman, his brother C. F. Douglas Ackman and sister-in-law Liane Roberts-Wallace. Roger is also survived by his sister Cornelia (Neil) Kempe, sister-in-law Patricia Ackman, brother-in-law William (Tim) Wallace, numerous devoted nieces, and nephews, and by many to whom he was simply “Uncle Rog”.
For those who knew Roger, they knew him to be a person who loved life and loved people. He was always quick to engage with a hearty handshake or a pat on the back. He had a warm smile and loved to have fun. His sense of humor and warmth have been remembered by so many in recent days.
Roger graduated from Westmount High School in 1956 and Mount Allison University in 1960. He was called to the bar in 1963 after earning his law degree at McGill University. He proudly served on the Board of Regents for Mount Allison in the 1980s. In his 30+ year career as a corporate lawyer and part of an executive team, he was a dedicated employee who touched and was touched by everyone with whom he came in contact.
Roger was a long-time member of the Royal St. Lawrence Yacht Club and the Royal Montreal Golf Club. He cherished his friendships from the Lac Marois community and the Quail Ridge Country Club in Florida. Most beloved to Roger was the family cottage “Ackman’s Anchorage” on the Brule shore in Shediac N.B.
We will miss him deeply and want to thank the wonderful caregivers at the Sunrise Residence, DDO (3rd Floor), and the palliative care team at the Lakeshore General Hospital. Their devotion and kindness ensured he was comfortable in his last days.
