Dorothy, Dot or Dottie as most of her friends called her, lived her entire life in Plant City and graduated from Florida Southern College. Dot was a schoolteacher, and retired real estate executive and was an active Director of the Hillsboro Bank in Plant City. Dot was a long-time member of the St. Peter's Episcopal Church and past member of the church vestry. She was also a former member of the East Hillsborough Historical Society, Ladies of the Elks, Arts Council of Plant City and the Moffit Cancer Center Foundation.
Dot loved traveling with her companion of 18 years, Nicholas Brown. She enjoyed playing bridge with friends bi-weekly. Dorothy will always be remembered as a loving and generous person who was full of life. She loved her family and would do anything to see her family happy and well.
Dot was preceded in death by her husband of 39 years, Walter Harkala (1997). Dot will be missed greatly by her family, including son, Hal Harkala (Beth) and daughter, Tracy Adams (Richard); sister, Carolyn Manee (Robert) and half-sister Rhonda Hardee; four grandkids, Ryan Adams, Ashley Adams Lazewski
(Matthew), Halee Harkala, and Kortnee Harkala; loving and devoted companion, Nicholas Brown. Other survivors include nephews, nieces, cousins and step grandchildren.
The family will greet visitors at Wells Memorial Funeral home from 4pm to 7pm on Thursday, November 12th, for a Celebration of Life viewing, a private funeral at St. Peter's Episcopal Church at 11 am on Friday, November 13th followed by a graveside service at Oaklawn Cemetery. We would love to extend an invitation to those who wish to pay their respects to join us at the Celebration of Life and graveside service.
