“Hello There Young Man”

Those are the words I always think of when I think of my Papa. I remember that being the first thing he always said to me anytime I went to visit, or spoke to him on the phone. To me, Papa was more than just a grandpa, he was greater than most ordinary men. Visiting him was like visiting a great sage at the top of a mountain somewhere - it seemed like he had a limitless amount of advice and guidance, and would never hesitate to teach me anything he thought would help me grow into the man I now am today.

He had a big hand in teaching me responsibility, from giving me my first pocket-knife and showing me how to whittle, to teaching me how to take care of cars and how to drive a stick-shift down the back roads of Polk City in his old Toyota.

I used to love going on walks with him around Lake Alfred when I was younger, although as fast as he walked, it seemed like I was always running to catch up! He would often walk me down the dirt road, past my tree, to the dock by the boat ramp and tell me stories about gators, (my favorite was the one about him catching a gator and scaring my grandma with it!). He also loved taking me fishing, and even though I only really remember catching a couple fish with him, I liked just sitting there with him and trying, eating vienna sausages and crackers the whole time.

One day I really hope I can be a grandpa like Papa was. It seemed like he not only played the game of life, but won it. Just sitting there feeding squirrels or watching the news without a care in the world, knowing that he put everything he had into creating and raising the amazing family he left behind, which still today is a living, breathing monument to all the love and dedication of one of the world’s greatest men.

I don't know how to put in words how much I Love You but I will try.
When you passed away part of me went with you. You will always be in my heart. In the 50 years of our marriage we had our good times and our bad times, but we always pulled through it together and was happy.
We were blessed with 3 beautiful children together and our love as a family was stronger than ever. Will always remember our family outings ( fishing, camping, trips to Canada, Smokey Mountains) together with your parents and mine.
I will be strong but it will be hard. I know you were a strong man and you wouldn't want us to grieve your passing but only time will heal us.
I love you so very much. 
Watch over all of us and keep us safe til it's our time to meet again.

Uncle Edgar was a good fishing partner its a shame we couldn't spend more time fishing together after I got older we had good times fishing at night I fished a lot when he was in the back of the boat sleeping still it was a lot of fun he always thought of me at fishing time .uncle edgar keep the lines tight and the bait wet. I only worked for Charlie for a short time at Westside. It didn't take long to realize that Charlie was a unique blend of professionalism, good humor and integrity.  My sympathy goes out to his family and friends.

Charles E. Corbitt:
Gone Fishin'

 
On warm, clear mornings as the sun was rising,
Going after bass was his only mission.
In his little blue boat with an excited son in tow,
Never happier was he than when 'Gone Fishin'.
On much colder days before the sun rose
He'd drive for hours to get in position.
If the mullet were there or even if not,
He was content 'cause he was 'Gone Fishin'.
Sometimes, after midnight, with the moon shining bright,
Dibbling with pork rind was his ammunition.
As strange as that sounds, it landed the big ones,
To justify this odd way of 'Gone Fishin'.
Coast to coast across Florida and sometimes farther still
He'd try any attack without inhibition.
Was he mad or insane? Had he just lost his mind?
Oh no, his mind had simply 'Gone Fishin'.
He was always searching for that lake, stream, or ocean,
For that bait, pole, and weather condition
That would all meld as one to become the most perfect
Time to check out and be 'Gone Fishin'.
But he wasn't alone in his countless adventures
For his bigger plans came to fruition.
He always took family for he knew without doubt
Without them there was no love in 'Gone Fishin'.
As we now try to cope and our hearts strain to break,
These thoughts should help ease the transition.
HIs search is now over, he's found the perfect place,
The boat he now sits in is the newest edition.
HIs bait lasts forever and his lines never break
And the fish grow without prohibition.
He's enjoying new life now with his mom and his dad,
After all it's a family tradition.
We know he's not lost and we'll see him real soon
For he's quite simply taken off and 'Gone Fishin'.

Dad, I will miss you greatly. As I reflect on your life I realize just how much time you devoted to me, taking me on so many wonderful little adventures. For twelve years I was thrilled to accompany you to the Buccaneers games. Even though they 'stank' for 10 of those years I still enjoyed immensely the time we spent going to the games. Despite my lack of patience as a fisherman, you never hesitated to take me with you and I wouldn't give back any of that time, including when we didn't catch anything. You disciplined me when it was needed but I always knew that you still loved me. I disagreed with you at times but I know you only ever wanted what was best for me. Dad, I love you deeply and my heart will now forever have a hole in it but I know you'd want us all to go on living our lives the best we can. You were and will continue to be one of the greatest blessings in my life and I will strive to spread that same blessing to others. Love, your 'baby' boy, Bobby

Bernice and Family, I am so sorry at the loss of a great man. Charlie was one of my first bosses at GTE. We shared a office and he taught me so much. One of the most important things he taught me was laughter and love of family. The children were little and he took such pride in all they did. Charlie always talked about Bernice and how special she was. Those days with Charlie and some of those guys were my best work experience. I have thought of him and the family many times over the years. My husband called me when he heard the news, he still is at Verizon. My heart is heavy and I will keep all of you in my prayers. I am sure he is already making people smile and teaching them about fishing. Charlie was a class act. Debbie Fernandez Wolfe

I am not good at putting how I feel into words, but I knew Charles as my papa. The man stronger then my dad and my best friend. He was the man who taught me many things in the 20 years of my life. Like how to catch fish and clean them, to how to tie a sheep shank knot in the rope for his boat. I will never forget the summer I spent with him at the house by the pool. or in the early morning barely awake down at the lake getting ready for a day of bass fishing. I will also remember the nights eating our Sunday dinner with the family or the summer nights sitting out back with him and my dad eating watermelon. I will take what he taught me for the rest of my life and never forget it. I love you papa and no matter what you will still be here with me in my heart and mind.

My sincerest condolances to the family of a fellow GTE buddy in Winter Haven and Tampa. It was a pleasure to be associated and work with Charlie and all the cutovers we were privileged to be engaged in over those years. I know he will be sincerely missed.

As we go threw life we do not know what the next day will bring or what will happen. as we grow older and move apart  and sometimes we do not stay in contact we are still family. so on day I tell you and family. I'm sad and hurt that I lost one of the best uncles that anybody ever have. he will always be loved and missed by me

Daddy "Charles" my father,my friend,my fishing buddy. Daddy, I will miss you with all my heart. You gave me strength when I was weak.You picked me up when ever I would fall. You gave me hope when I felt there was none left. Daddy I do not know how to say goodbye, it hurts me deeply that I will not be able to have those long talks or fish by your side again.When I lost Christina you gave me the strength to live on then and now I know " by your advice" I must let you go and live on but for only knowing that someday I will be by your side again. Daddy may you rest in peace and I will be strong. I love you.

Edgar was more than just my cousin, he was the "Big Brother" I never had.  He and I shared a special bond.  He was always as close as the phone.  In his later years, we talked every Saturday for a long time.  As children (he being much older), I looked up to him.  I will miss him, but I shall always remember his sense of humor and his wonderful laugh.
