Joan Catherine Mulcahy Thompson, age 82, passed away July 1, 2019, in Addison, TX. She was preceded in death by her beloved parents Timothy John Mulcahy and Mary Elisabeth Kluge Mulcahy, and her husband John Carl Thompson. Joan is survived by her brothers, James Roger Mulcahy and Timothy Ralph Mulcahy.
Joan was born in Bridgeport, Connecticut, February 16, 1937. She grew up in Dallas, Texas. She attended high school at The Hockaday School, and later graduated from Southern Methodist University with a degree in Speech Therapy and Education. She earned her master’s at the Teacher’s College, Columbia University; she then lived and trained at the Lexington School for the Deaf, in New York, NY.
Joan joined the Air Force in 1961 in Northern Japan (Misawa) as the head speech therapist and special education teacher for children on the military base. In 1963, she transferred to the Army’s headquarters in Nuremberg, Germany, where she was a speech pathologist. When her military contract expired, she returned to Dallas and worked for the Dallas Society for Crippled Children and was a teacher for special education and a speech therapist in the Dallas Independent School District.
Joan enjoyed reading, history, tutoring and telling stories about her life and experiences. She was involved in many local organizations, including the Dallas Women’s Club, the Cavanaugh Flight Museum in Addison, and the Braniff Airways Retirement Club.
Joan will be cremated and her interment will be in the Dallas-Ft. Worth National Cemetery with her beloved husband John Carl Thompson.
