Janet was born in Long Beach, California on March 23, 1946, the daughter of Donna Christine Garton Jelen and the late Jerry Frank Jelen of Plano, Texas.
Janet graduated from Pascal High School in Fort Worth in 1964 and graduated from the University of Texas at Austin in 1968.
She obtained a Master’s Degree in History at Stephen F. Austin University in Nacogdoches in 1970. She maintained a lifelong interest in the study of history.
Janet was a devoted member of Wilshire Baptist, where she sang in the choir and volunteered her time and talents.
Janet was also a dedicated crafter and never met a craft she didn’t like. She was active in the Quilters Guild of Dallas, Fiber Artists Guild of Dallas, Embroiderers’ Guild of Dallas and the American Needlework Guild.
She was also active in the Jane Austen Society of North America, the North Texas Chapter.
Janet was interested in travel, history, crafts, music, art and a host of other subjects. She is survived by her mother; her sister, Susan Jelen of Plano, Texas; her brother, Frank Jelen of Houston, Texas; her beloved niece Sarah Jelen Saint and her family, as well as numerous friends and relatives. She will be greatly missed.

A private graveside service will be at the Jelen Family plot at Plano Mutual Cemetery, Plano, Texas.
A memorial service and celebration of life for Janet will be held on Friday, September 30, 2016 at 3:00 PM at the Wilshire Baptist Church, located at 4316 Abrams Road, Dallas, TX 75214.
A visitation will be held the evening prior, Thursday, September 29, 2016 from 6:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Ted Dickey Funeral Home located at 2128 18th Street, Plano, Texas 75074.
