Charles graduated from Plano High School in 1953 and attended East Texas State University. He was also a member of the National Guard.
Charles married Betty James on June 22, 1956, and were together for 67 ½ years.
Charles was active in his community. A member of the Plano Masonic Lodge for over 64 years, Shriner, and a Past Worthy Patron of the Plano Order of the Eastern Star. He worked for Southland Supply Wholesale Plumbing Company in Dallas for over 30 years. He opened his own company and retired from M&H Plumbing Supply.
He was also one of the founders of the Plano Little League Football organization, announcing games at Rice Field as well as coaching several teams. He enjoyed being a member of the Plano CB Radio Club helping organize rest stops on holidays and assisting the Plano Police Department direct traffic at the football games. He was also a member of the “Prop Poppers”, an amateur RC plane group enjoying many hours of flying.
When not busy working, he also enjoyed woodworking, golf, riding motorcycles, vacations, and the family Lakehouse. Charles was a member of the First Christian Church and Board Member of the Plano Old Settlers Association.
He is survived by his wife Betty Merritt, daughter, Cindy Merritt-Madding, Grandchildren, Jackie Madding (Chris Rains), Christopher Madding (Ashley Madding), Marisa Merritt and Rachel Merritt. Great Grandchildren, Logan Moody, Colton Madding, Levi Madding, Beau Johnson, Kylee Rains, Jackson Rains and several nieces and nephews.
