Brian Porter, 61, of Roanoke, Virginia, passed away on July 30, 2023 in McKinney, Texas. Brian was a kind soul, good friend, brother and Poppi who was loved by everyone who knew him. He is survived by his son-in-law, Justin Goodrich (wife Leslie); grandson, Atticus; mother, Exie; brothers Charles and David (wife Allison) and sister, Wendy. He is preceded in death by fiancé, Dawn Goodrich; father, Wallace and brother, Tony.
At a young age, Brian had an equal love for music and computers. After graduating from Salem High School, he received his undergraduate degree from Redford University in music performance with a minor in computer science. After completing graduate studies in computer science at Illinois State University his programming skills took him all over the United States working for companies like Pepsi Co. and the University of Las Vegas.
Brian and Dawn had a life full of love and laughter that carried them from Texas to Vegas and back to Texas again. They genuinely enjoyed each other. Brian, Dawn and their dog Zoe had many adventures throughout many states. Brian became a grandfather (Poppi) to Atticus in 2012, a role he seemed born for. Shortly after Atticus was born Dawn passed away with Brian at her side.
Brian returned to Virginia in 2013 to help care for his mother after the death of his father. During this time he began a career at Carilion Clinic as a programmer. Although he had a scientific and analytical mind, his coworkers would often say he could fix any broken code and explain things in a way that “didn’t make you feel dumb”. He had a big heart and a gentle demeanor.
After several years, Brian and Zoe moved back to Texas. Upon their return, they lived with Justin, Atticus and Leslie. Brian took this opportunity to teach and share with Atticus all the wonders of Star Wars, Harry Potter and Lord of the Rings. Poppi bought Atticus his first computer, introduced him to classical music and cherished every drawing Atti ever made for him. Poppi and Atticus had an incredibly special bond.
Growing up, Brian was his brother’s musical mentor. He encouraged David to pursue music and taught him the value of disciplined studies and hard practice. Brian shared his knowledge and passions with all those he loved.
He was loved. He is missed.
