She was born to Chester O. and May (Laird) McCartney on November 16, 1924, in the small rural town of South Haven, KS. After living in several rural communities of Kansas and Kentucky, Betty spent her school years in Wellington, KS. She graduated from Wellington High School in 1942.
Betty married Glenn Hayes on Christmas Day 1947. At the time of his passing in 2011, they had been married 63-1/2 years.
She was a “modern woman” of her era; being very independent and career-minded. Upon graduating high school, Betty began working for Clarkson & Startz Aircraft Company. She also volunteered at the Kansas USO during WWII. When her husband’s engineering career took the family to Livonia, MI in 1956, Betty continued her career by joining Ford Motor Company. Her career included purchasing support for the introduction of the Ford Mustang. She retired in June, 1966.
Betty was an avid sports fan and accomplished bowler and golfer. She was very proud of her hole in one shot at Plum Hollow Country Club in Southfield, MI.
Betty and Glenn spent their retirement years in Florida and enjoyed traveling throughout the United States in their RV. Betty was always up for a new adventure.
Betty is preceded in death by her brothers, Owen and Tom McCartney. She is survived by daughters, Sherryl Archer of Plano, TX and Glenna Hayes of Wylie, TX; grandchildren Tracey Frantz and Michael Lorenz of Michigan; great-grandsons Tom and Brad Lorenz of Michigan; her brother and sister-in-law, Jerry & Cora McCartney of Garden City, KS and various nieces and nephews.
