Plainview, NY - Joseph D. Cassidy was born on August 29, 1920 in New York, NY and died in Plainview, NY on March 25, 2012 in his beloved home. He was the son of Joseph and Sarah Cassidy, New York, NY. He attended Cathedral Boys High School in New York, NY; and was an alter boy at St. Patrick’s Cathedral having served under Bishop Fulton Sheen. Joseph earned his undergraduate degree in accounting from Manhattan College, Bronx, NY in 1942 and his Masters of Business Administration from New York University.
He proudly served his country in World War II and the Korean conflict as a Marine Corps fighter pilot seeing combat action in Philippines during WW II. After Korea, he continued his military service with the Marine Corps Reserves and retired with the rank of Lieutenant Colonel. He was also a Purple Heart recipient for his duty in WWII.
Joseph was a Certified Public Accountant and during his professional career and worked for Brooklyn Union Gas, was a partner at Goodbody & Co. and retired from Merrill Lynch & Co. with over 25 years or service. Early in his carrier Joseph was an accounting instructor at Manhattan College and later on in the 1970-80's he taught accounting in the evening at NY Institute of Technology and Pace Univesity.
He was pre-deceased by his loving wife Veronica (2005) and his son Kevin (1963.) He is survived by his other five children, Barbara Bratton and her husband Edwin of Lewistown, PA and their children Jennifer, Timothy and Mathew; Joseph and his partner Keith Rauschenbach of Hoboken; Gerard and his wife Elaine of Cumberland Foreside, ME and their children Erin, Shannon and Ryan; Kieran and his wife Elise of Fairfield, CT and their children Kevin, Sean and Quinn; and Maureen Martin and her husband John of Fairfield, CT and son Jack.
He is survived by his sisters Catherine Cassidy, Marion Breiter and Ann Lynch and was predeceased by his parents, brothers, John, Francis and Charles and sisters, Margaret Cassidy, Patricia Cassidy and Patricia Pickett.
Friends and relatives may visit Vernon C. Wagner Funeral Homes 655 Old Country Road, Plainview on Friday from 2-5 pm and 7-9 pm. A mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 AM on Saturday at St. Pius X Plainview. Interment to follow at St. Charles Cemetery Farmingdale.
