Bill McCown, 76 years old, long time resident of Pollock Pines passed away peacefully at home on September 14, 2013. The son of Floyd and Eloise McCown, Bill was born on April 16, 1937 in Niles, Ca. He graduated from Sonora High School, attended Westmont College, and received his Bachelor’s Degree and teaching credential from the University of California, at Santa Barbara.
Bill married his high school sweetheart Linda Carey on August 31, 1957. In 1960 Bill began his teaching career in Castro Valley. In 1964 he decided he was tired of the city and moved his family to the beautiful town of Pollock Pines to work for the Pollock Pines School District as a teacher. He later served as principal of Pinewood for many years, but returned to the classroom because of his dedication to teaching. He taught at Sierra Ridge and was active in their athletics program. Bill had a love for teaching, and a commitment to education and mentoring students. Even after retiring from teaching in 1997 Bill returned to Sierra Ridge to work part time as the Dean of Students.
Bill was dearly loved by his wife of 56 years ,Linda McCown, and his children, Jeri (Bob) Avery; Matt McCown; Kelly (Cindy) McCown; Joni (Chris) Campos, his sister Susie (Dave) Ives. He will be deeply missed by his grandchildren, Matthew, Steve, Holly, Niki, Paul, Josh, Ty, Rebeca and 7 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents Floyd and Eloise McCown, a brother Leslie “Buzz” McCown and his daughter in law Terri McCown.
Bill attended the Pollock Pines Community Church, 6361 Pony Express Trail, where a celebration of his life will be held on Saturday, September 28th at 11am followed by a reception.
