Patrick John Sullivan, Sr. passed away peacefully on Monday, March 13, at the age of 93. He was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, on February 5, 1930, to George and Emma (Rosa) Sullivan and grew up in the Strip District.
In 1948, he met Stella Bernadette Plucinski (deceased), and they married on May 30, 1952. Pat and Stella moved to the North Hills area in 1958 where they went on to have, love and raise four sons: Patrick, Jr., Kevin, Gary, and Scott; Patrick took joy in his six grandchildren and his great-grandson. Throughout his life, Pat’s ethos was “work hard” and “be the best at whatever you choose to do”, a practice that he emphasized to his sons, his grandchildren, and anyone else who would listen.
Pat served in the Army during the Korean War from 1952-1954, where he was stationed in Fort Richardson, Alaska. He took enormous pride in serving in the military and had a great love for his country. Pat attended Connelley Vocational School in Pittsburgh where he found his passion and was trained as a draftsman. Pat worked as a Hydraulics engineer for over 40 years at Weinman Pump & Supply until he retired as Manager of Engineering and Production in 1997. At his core, Pat was a designer, builder, fixer, and problem solver. He was extremely handy and became skilled at plumbing, electrical wiring, auto repair, re-modeling, and building. He was always willing to help family and friends with whatever building or repair projects they needed.
Pat was an excellent athlete growing up, playing semi-professional baseball in his youth and later in life coaching youth baseball, playing softball, golfing, and bowling. After Pat retired, he enjoyed time with Stella (“Babe”) – the love of his life - going to the movies, going out to eat, traveling, watching their grandchildren, and sipping a drink in the afternoons on their back deck. He also enjoyed building puzzles, collecting foreign currency, and studying World War II history. His knowledge, wisdom, curiosity, and stories will be greatly missed.
Pat was preceded in death by his wife Stella, his sister Genevieve, and his brothers George, Robert, and Ralph. He is survived by his brother James; his sons Patrick Jr., Kevin, Gary, and Scott; his daughters-in-law Peggy, Tracy, and Amy; his six grandchildren – Brian, Brett (Emily), Leanna, Sean, Nikolas, and Carmen - and his great grandson Hayden.
Visitation will be Sunday, March 19, 2:00 - 4:00 pm and 6:00-8:00 pm at Brandt Funeral Home, 1032 Perry Highway, Pittsburgh. All are welcome to attend his funeral mass on Monday, March 20, 10:00 am, at Saint Sebastian Church (Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish) at 311 Siebert Road, Pittsburgh.
