Mary L Weis

Mary Linda (Leahy) Weis, 77, of Ross Township passed away peacefully in her sleep on the morning of Thursday, January 11th surrounded by her family and loved ones. Minutes later, the sun rose and shone warm light across the city of Pittsburgh on that cold morning, much like the way Mary projected light and warmth for anyone who was fortunate enough to know her.

Mary was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania on August 19th, 1946 to Mae and Francis James Leahy. In her life Mary was first and foremost a loving and devoted spouse, amazing mother to five children and a loving grandmother and great-grandmother to many. In her youth Mary attended Elizabeth Seton High School where she served as a student librarian and is still fondly remembered by former classmates to this day. Her own education forged a passion for learning, reading as well as unwavering compassion and caring for others that formed a common thread for how she would live for the rest of her life. Later, as a young woman, Mary was told by a fortune teller that she would find the love of her life in her own backyard. Upon returning home, she saw Bill in the yard next door working on his car. Years later, in July of 1968 Mary married William Weis after he finished Naval service and they began a fifty-five year long journey raising five children.

As a mother, Mary ran a tight ship in an ever-growing household instilling a high standard for cooperation, caring, education and having tons of fun when the moment was there. While raising five children and as a foster parent several other children, Mary was a driving force to ensure learning, reading, music, athletics and creativity was baked into the family culture. There were countless recitals, concerts, school activities and sports games that required long days of driving in the family station wagon. Fun was never in short supply whether it was at home baking cookies, making chocolate, gingerbread houses, backyard sled riding in the winter or swimming in the summer, there was never a dull moment in the Weis house. The fun did not stop there as Mary loved to travel and loved to spend time lounging at the beach. Like clockwork, each summer was filled with vacations to the beach, long days of swimming and road trips to visit family and friends. After her kids were grown, Mary and Bill made it a priority to travel together on cruises and trips, always making sure to find a beach.

Mary also left a powerful mark on her community in the North Hills of Pittsburgh during her career as a Pre-K teacher for St. Paul’s Preschool in Allison Park nurturing the development and growth of countless children and families. Later in life, in line with her love of reading and education, Mary worked at Northland Library until her well-deserved retirement. Her favorite part of her work was mentoring and nurturing high school students who worked and volunteered with the library. Mary always had a smile, kind words, care for others and a natural inclination for supporting and mentoring young people in her community that reverberates across the city and of Pittsburgh and beyond.

Mary is survived by her loving and devoted husband of fifty-five years William Weis, her sister Betsy Covington, her five children Kevin, Jennifer, Michael, Matthew and Jessica as well as twenty grandchildren and great grandchildren.

Friends are invited to the H.P. Brandt Funeral Home 1032 Perry Hwy Pittsburgh PA 15237 on Tuesday January 16, 2024 from 2PM to 4PM and 6PM to 8PM. A Catholic Blessing Service on Wednesday January 17, 2024 at 1pm in the funeral home chapel. Burial at the National Cemetery of the Alleghenies.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations to further the legacy of Mary’s love of reading and learning can be made to the Northland Public Library foundation.
