Karen Diane Walczak (nee Wiegand), 78, formerly of Franklin Park, went home to be with her Lord and Savior on August 29, 2022. Preceded in death by her beloved husband- Gerald Walczak, married for 50 years; loving mother of Heather L. (Judson) DiVincenzo of Solon, OH, and Scott C. Walczak of Alpharetta, GA. A proud grandmother of Carter, Jackson and Juliana who were her heart and joy.
Karen was born on May 22, 1944, in Pittsburgh, Pa., a daughter of loving parents of the late Marion and Joseph Wiegand. Sister of Gary and the late Marilyn (Marny) Gurtner (Donald). A graduate of North Hills High School in 1962.
Karen possessed many creative talents. She was known for her baking and made the most irresistible pies on the planet. Her apple and pumpkin pies were always eagerly anticipated at family holiday gatherings; it was impossible to eat just one slice!!
She showcased her love and skill with handiwork in knitting, cross stitch, sewing, but mostly quilting. Whether for a birthday, wedding, special event, or “just because”, those blessed to receive a quilt were amazed at the intricacy and beauty of her craft. She was an active member of the Kon-o-Kwee Quilters for over 10 years.
Later in life, music became a key to Karen’s heart and soul and made her spirit dance. Neil Diamond being her favorite. That spirit shed light towards so many during her life through her smiles and infectious laughter. She loved nothing more than to make a handmade gift for someone. The intricate Christmas ornaments she made throughout the years will be treasured by family and friends, as each one is lovingly placed upon the tree.
Karen was born with having a “gift of help” and possessed a caring and giving spirit. She helped others in many ways both big and small. She helped the elderly and severely handicapped when she drove as an Access driver for North Hills Transportation. She helped by volunteering at the St. Francis Nursing Home in Cranberry, and by making quilts and other keepsakes for family, friends and members of her church family at Northway Community Church. For any big or small event or need, she was always there to lend a hand.
Her boundless energy also manifested itself through various outings and adventures on boats, bikes, ships, planes, on foot, and even on family birthday “drive-by yard decorations” (think flamingos, toilet paper, and other assorted lawn dressings). Karen was always an enthusiastic participant and her silly and infectious sense of humor added fun to any occasion.
As she developed Alzheimer’s disease and moved to Maplewood Senior Living, she continued to bring joy and comfort to those around her. Our family extends much gratitude to the RSAs, nurses and staff of Maplewood who not only provided care for our Mom, but grew to love her and came alongside her by showing her much love and encouragement that was uplifting to her as this terrible disease progressed.
She leaves behind a legacy of selflessness in the joyful manner in which she provided friendship, loved, cared for and nurtured all those whom she touched. Loyal friend, devoted caregiver, and welcomed into heaven as a good and faithful servant.
