Gale George Kenney, age 93, formerly of Ingomar, died peacefully on Wednesday, September 27, 2017. He is survived by his longtime love, Ann Safford of Stuart, FL and preceded in death by his wife Gloria Elaine (Carlisle) Kenney and his sister Clara Jane Kenney. Fondly dubbed “The Great Oak” Gale was the beloved father of Dr. John Kenney (Caroline) of Beaufort, SC, Dr. David Kenney of Connellsville, Mary Dru Simeone (Tony) of Avonworth Heights and Dr. Richard Kenney of Upper St. Clair. He is survived by grandchildren: Dr. Christopher Kenney (Lindsay), Lt. Col. Jonathan Kenney, Sean Mitchell (Jennifer), Matthew Kenney, Jack Kenney, Brandon Kenney, Susan Howard (Stamps), Katie Vizzerra, Esq. (Michael), Ryan Kenney, Grace Kenney, and two great granddaughters Lily and Hannah Mitchell.
After Japan bombed Pearl Harbor, Gale was drafted into the U.S. Army. He was selected for a Special Engineering Detachment in Oak Ridge, Tennessee under the auspices of the Manhattan District of the Atomic Energy Commission. There he was assigned to work for the Union Carbide & Carbon Corporation in their Gaseous Fusion Plant where he purified Uranium Hexafluoride for the Atomic Bomb. For this service he received the Meritorious Service Award as a member of the Special Engineering Detachment, 9812th Technical Service Unite in the Corps of Engineers, Manhattan District for participation in the production of the Atomic Bomb at Oakridge, Tennessee contributing to the successful conclusion of WWII.
Gale was a company man who worked for Koppers Company for nearly 40 years as the Manager of Health & Safety for production plants across the United States and abroad. He also invented a patented process during his tenure. Upon retiring to Hobe Sound, Florida he became a Safety Consultant and Expert Witness on accident investigations working for Gary Robinson, Inc. of Tequesta, FL. Until his early 90’s, Gale enjoyed dancing and traveling abroad. He was a 50 year member of McKinley-Struckrath Lodge, No. 318, F. & A.M., Masonic Lodge of Pittsburgh, PA and a 35 year Member of Elks USA, Stuart-Jensen, FL #1870.
