She was born on December 24, 1930, in West View, Pennsylvania. She was the youngest of five children of Frank L. Schmidt and Mary A. Young. As a child, Dolores enjoyed watching Westerns on television and enjoyed listening to country music. She loved horses and her small garden in the back yard of her family’s home. She also loved dancing at West View Park Danceland. She worked as a secretary for the North Hills News Record and later as a tax clerk for McCandless Township.
She enjoyed going to Ponderosa Park for Country Music Jamborees and enjoyed watching her son compete in bicycle races at Highland Park and watching her son compete in track and field meets at North Allegheny High School. She loved walking around North Park Lake and loved taking her family on summer vacations to Geneva-on-the-Lake, Ohio.
She loved the Pittsburgh Steelers and cheered for them every Sunday. She was a dedicated mother and grandmother. She baked a wide variety of cookies every Christmas for friends in the neighborhood and for all her relatives. She started baking immediately after Thanksgiving and did not stop until Christmas Eve. She always baked everyone's favorite cake for their birthday celebration and welcomed her kids home from school with hot chocolate and cookies.
She is survived by one brother, Jack Schmidt, and her children: Donald Rice (Rose), Douglas Rice (Iko), Dennis Rice (Theresa), Dee Schlotter (Frank) and Diana Campbell (Robert), and 10 grandchildren: Cory, AnnMarie, Natalie, Livia, Quentin, Hannah, Isabella, Callie, Abigail and Jack.
Respecting Dolores’ wishes, no viewing will be held; instead, a mass of Christian Burial will be held at St Theresa of Avila Church- Our Lady of Mount Carmel Parish 1000 Avila Ct. Pittsburgh PA 15237 on Wednesday, April 19th, 2023, at 10AM. A luncheon will follow at one of her favorite restaurants, Pizza Roma in Mccandless. in lieu of flowers, donations can be sent to Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh.
