Shirley Jean Cooper Simpson Lusk, 70, of Pineville, passed away Monday, September 29, 2014 at Raleigh General Hospital following a sudden illness. Born July 16, 1944 at Pineville, she was the daughter of the late Virginia Long and Richard Simpson, and Alva Cooper. She enjoyed doting on her family, especially her grandchildren. In addition to her parents and step-father, she was preceded in death by her husband, Estil Lusk, Jr.; brothers, Jimmy Simpson and Dennis Simpson; sisters, Christine Simpson, Barbara Tolliver, Dorene Miller, step-daughter, Claudia Rakes and “adoptive parents” Daisy and Gilbert Mitchem. Survivors include her son, Estil “Lee” Lusk, III (Barbara Ramsey) of Pineville. Her daughter, Lisa Kara ( David Adkins) of Pineville. 5 sisters, Marie (Joseph) Whittington ; Connie (Clyde) Davis; Betty (Ronnie) Mitchem; Cletis Miller and Diana Faulkner. 10 grandchildren: Brandon (Kristina) Church, Justin (Katy) Church, Keli Jean Kara, Austin “Lusk” Cline, Scott “Lusk” Stacy, Teresa (Shannon) Hall, Kevin Kara, Michael Valle, Misty (David) Thompson and Joanna (David) Bailey. 9 great-grandchildren: Derrick & Adrianna Hall, Devyn & Mackenzie Thompson, Benjamin Bailey, Breanna & Branden Russell, Nathan Hammond and Aurora Church (and her mother, Amy). A special “adoptive sister” Donna (Frank) Valle. She is also survived by a special cousin, Sue Shumate, along with many others who enriched her life. A celebration of Shirley’s life will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday, October 4, 2014 in the Calfee Funeral Service Chapel with Rev. Mervin Smith and Randall McNew officiating.
