He was born December 14, 1930 at Greenville, South Carolina, to William Wayne Sr. and Nora (Skelton) Pickel. He graduated from Six Mile High School.
Mr. Pickel served in the United States Army during the Korean War.
On June 26, 1954, he was united in marriage to Carolyn Entrekin at Pickens, South Carolina. They lived mostly in Greenville, South Carolina before moving to Pittsburg in 2002.
Membership was held in the Trinity Baptist Church. Sam was a former Deacon in the church. Mr. Pickel took great pride in his yard and was the recipient of the Pittsburg Beautiful Award in September 2011.
Survivors include his wife, Carolyn of the home; a daughter, Denise Calloway and her husband, Terry of Pittsburg; a brother, W. Earl Pickel of Bufford, South Carolina and a sister, Elizabeth (Lib) Guerry of West Columbia, South Carolina.
He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, W.W. (Bill) Pickel, Jr., and Donald Bruce Pickel and two sisters, Margaret Davis and Sarah Powell.
A visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. – 7:00 p.m. Tuesday, April 27, 2021 at the Brenner Mortuary. A graveside service will be held Friday, April 30, 2021, at 2 p.m. in the Hillcrest Memorial Park Cemetery in Pickens, South Carolina. The family suggests memorials to the Alzheimer’s Association.
