Vera Marie Jakubicek, of Phoenix, Arizona passed away on July 13, 2024 after a courageous battle with gallbladder cancer. She was 91. Vera was born on January 9, 1933 to Mike and Mary (Chabica) Bursik in Blenheim, Ontario, Canada.
Vera met Joseph Jakubicek in Ontario and they were married in July of 1961. They proceeded to move to Berwyn, Illinois and they were blessed with two children, Christine (Smith) and Joseph. Vera was an elementary school teacher, teaching in Canada and then in Illinois, taking time off to raise her children before returning to teaching. She later worked as a manager at a small store in the local mall. In 1994, Vera and Joseph moved to Phoenix, Arizona to retire and enjoy their grandsons.
Vera had a beautiful soprano voice and could be heard singing every weekend as a member of the Corpus Christi Catholic Church choir. Vera was an active member of her local senior community, often organizing senior trips to local casinos and even as far as Las Vegas. Vera was a member of the Silver Sneakers senior exercise group at the YMCA. She would position herself in the front of the exercise room next to the instructor, do all the exercises with perfect form, and was a cheerleader and friend to all her fellow Silver Sneakers members.
Vera was predeceased by her parents and her husband Joseph of 59 years. She is survived by her two children Christine (Brian) Smith, and Joseph (Jeannette), as well as her three grandsons Jason (Allison) Patrick-Smith, Ryan Smith, and Logan Smith. She is also survived by her sister Rose Foster, and several nieces and nephews.
Services will be held at Corpus Christi Catholic Church at 3550 E Knox Rd in Phoenix. Visitation at 9:30AM followed by funeral Mass at 10AM.
