He was last employed for 20 years as an employee for the Department of the Army, last working at the Army field Support Command at Rock Island, IL. He retired in July 2003 to Glendale, Arizona after 40 years of government service with assignments in Vilseck, Germany, the former Yugoslavian Republic of Macedonia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Atlanta, and Huntsville, Alabama. He has been awarded two Superior Civilian Service medals, three Commander's Award for Civilian Service medals, a NA Service medal and a Desert Shield and Desert Storm Service medal. Mr. Thompson served over 20 years in the U.S. Army, retiring in 1984 as a Master Sergeant. He served overseas tours in Korea, two tours in Vietnam, and four tours in Germany. He had also been to Spain, France, Denmark, Switzerland, Austria, Croatia, Luxemburg, Czech Republic, Sicily, Belgium, Holland, Sweden, Norway, Ireland, Bahrain, Japan, Mexico, Canada, Alaska, Hawaii, the Philippines, Cambodia and Hong Kong in his travels. He had been awarded 32 medals in the Army including the Bronze Star Medal, three Meritorious Service Medals, four Army commendation Medals, an Army Achievement Medal, six Good Conduct Medals, a Viet Nam Service Medal, a Vietnam Campaign Medal with 5 campaign stars and the Vietnam Cross of Gallantry.
He attended Astoria High School from 1958-1961 and graduated from Oak Harbor (WA) High School in 1962. He attended Western Washington State College (62-63) and graduated from Black Hawk College, Moline, IL in 1989. He married Maryann Radetzki Finke in Davenport, IA on June 9, 1992. In his youth, he attained the rank of Life Scout, one step below Eagle Scout. He was selected as a representative to Boy's State (OR) in 1961. He was selected as Island County's (WA) Outstanding Journalism Student in 1962. He had lettered in Varsity football and track in high school. In high school, he belonged to the Letterman's Club, The Key Club, Quill and Scroll, and the National Honor Society.
His membership included life membership in the VFW at Moline IL Post 2153, where he had served as Post Senior and Junior Vice Commander and Chaplain. He was also a member of American Legion Post 154, Bettendorf, IA. He had previously belonged to the Moose and Eagles Lodges in Alabama.
He enjoyed spending time with his loving wife, Maryann, bowling, golfing, fishing and flower gardening. He especially liked times spent with his daughter and stepdaughters and the six grandchildren.
Survivors include his wife, Maryann, daughter LaRonna Thompson, Tacoma, WA, stepdaughters and spouses Kimberly and John Mahus and Beth Nimmervoll and grandchildren Wynter Skye Woodall of Tacoma, WA, Zachary, Wesley, Kelly Ann Miller and Michael and Berit Nimmervoll, all of Phoenix, sisters and spouse, Sherri and Dolan Van Schaick, Goodyear, AZ and Melissa and Don Alexander, Edmons, WA, brother and spouse Noel and Debbie Thompson, Springboro, OH and special friend and brother-in-law, Larry Radetzki, Bettendorf, IA.
He was preceded in death by his father in 1993, and his mother, grandmother and mother-in-law in 1998.
