January 19, 1965 - December 1, 2022
Todd Forrest Sherman - artist, author, poet and friend to all, sailed off Into the Realm on December 1, 2022 after more than 57 glorious years of life and adventure.
A 7th generation Cape Codder, Todd was born in Hyannis, Massachusetts in 1965. He learned his first curse words at age three from his father Donny after hearing him bang his thumb with a hammer. He built upon that vocabulary to hold court with friends and family, oftentimes making them laugh hard enough that a change of clothes was needed.
As a boy, Todd’s taste for travel and adventure was piqued by his parents’ decision to escape the Nixon administration and move to Mexico. Knowing that his mother Diane and his dad had placed little planning in the trip, Todd vowed that he would take his younger brother Casey back to the US by selling toilet paper on the street, should anything happen to them.
When he eventually returned to Cape Cod with his family, Todd built lifelong friendships with just about everyone he met. His early passions centered around his love for Elvis, The Beatles, Jimi Hendrix and Bruce Lee.
Todd took his love for martial arts seriously and was later awarded a black belt in Tae Kwon Do from his sensei and mentor Keith Rosary. Todd attended Barnstable High School and hosted epic parties as king of the so-called Oilmen for the class of 1984 and organized underground boxing matches and Wimbledon style badminton tournaments at what became to be infamously known as “The Sherman House.”
After graduating from BHS, Todd traveled west to San Francisco to study screenwriting at San Francisco State University under professor August Coppola. With a college diploma in hand, Todd then embarked on a Kerouac like journey on the road, gathering unique and often wild lifetime experiences to write about. From The Burning Man festival, to the Painted Desert, Todd made memories and accumulated best friends wherever he roamed.
A gifted artist, Todd began oil painting in his 20’s and built an impressive portfolio of work that he later displayed and sold at his fine art galleries in Hyannis and California. Like him, his artwork was eclectic and vibrant with each canvas telling a story of his many travels. Todd was equally talented as a writer. He was a 2017 Ragdale Writing Scholar and spent more than a decade working on a fictional tome titled Into The Realm, a story about a young man’s journey in the waters off Cape Cod and into the beyond. Todd’s book was published in 2022 and has received 5 star ratings on Amazon and praise from bestselling authors like William Martin.
Todd also had a love of Cape Cod history and gave his brother Casey Sherman the idea to write the maritime classic; The Finest Hours.
Todd’s finest hours were spent surrounded by friends and family, including his beloved son Jack, his Uncle Jim Sherman and his nieces Bella and Mia who lovingly referred to him as their “Crazy Uncle Todd.” He loved kayaking on the Cape or just sitting in the sand with his favorite Philip K. Dick novel. Most of all, Todd loved making everyone laugh and smile. He was the bringer of joy and his memory will be cherished by friends around the world.
Todd was predeceased by his father Donald Sherman and his sister Susan Sherman. He is survived by his son Jack Forrest Sherman of Carmichael, California, his mother Diane F. Dodd, of Hyannis, Massachusetts, his brother Casey Sherman and his wife Kristin Sherman of Marshfield, Massachusetts, his nieces Bella and Mia Sherman of Marshfield, Massachusetts, his uncle James Sherman of Hyannis, Massachusetts, and several aunts, uncles and cherished cousins.
Funeral services will be private. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you offer an act of kindness in Todd's memory.
