Susie Martin, 79, passed away Wednesday, July 27, 2011 at Banner Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix, AZ with her family by her side. Mrs. Martin was born on August 27, 1931, in Toronto, OH, the daughter of Riley Mulford and Minnie Saunders Mulford, and grew up in Middleport, OH along the Ohio River.
As a youth she enjoyed long walks with her mother in the woods along the river. She also learned her mother’s sense of generosity as well. This was during the Great Depression, and her mother was always willing to share with those less fortunate. Homeless transients passing through the area knew they could always get something to eat at the Mulford home, and it was this same kind of generosity Susie practiced all her life.
At age 13 following the death of her mother, Susie moved to Arizona to live with her sister Allie. Here she met the love of her life Cleveland Martin. Susie and Cleve were married on February 12, 1950 and lived the next 61 years together. It was as a young adult that Susie accepted Jesus Christ as her Lord and Savior. Susie and Cleve had two children, Judy and Dan. While raising her children Susie helped support the family by working as a unit secretary at Phoenix General Hospital from where she retired in 1988 after 34 years of service.
Susie was a devoted wife and mother. She was a passionate reader of novels and loved playing with her beloved dogs. She enjoyed crocheting and vacationing at the beach, especially Pismo Beach, CA. Susie is survived by her husband Cleve, son Dan, daughter Judy and her husband Ed Gerdemann, and her dog Zach.
Private services will be held at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, August 3, 2011, at the Greer-Wilson Funeral Home, 5921 W. Thomas Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85033.
Arrangements under the direction of Funeraria Del Angel Greer-Wilson Chapel, Phoenix, Arizona.
