Sarah Figueroa went home to the Lord on Friday, January 25, 2013 after a valiant fight with pneumonia and Alzheimer's disease. She left us from Hospice of the Valley , Sherman Home, resting comfortably and at peace. Sarah was born on May 21, 1929 in El Paso, Texas. She moved to Phoenix as a child and graduated from Phoenix Union High School where she met her future husband Joe. He served in the Navy in World War II and in the Reserves upon his return from war. He and Sarah married August 4, 1947 while Joe was attending Phoenix College. Their first son, Joe was born in 1948 and their second son, Mike, joined the family in 1952. Sarah was a mom and housewife until the boys were out of school. She then went to work for J.C. Penney where she was the supervisor of the Housewares/Linen Department at the Christown Mall. She retired from J.C. Penney's at age 62 after 25 years. She was preceded in death by her parents and her husband who passed away in 2007. Survivors include two sons Joe (Mary Ann) and Mike (Lyn). Grandchildren Terry, Jodi, Matt (Melissa), Bryan (Nikki), Manuel (Mary) and Tina (Tim). She is also survived by 10 great-grandchildren and her sister, Josie Grundy and nephew, Paul Grundy. Services will be held Wednesday, January 30, 2013 at Greenwood Memory Lawn Chapel, 719 N. 27th Ave., Phoenix. Viewing will be at 9:30AM with the funeral at 10:30AM. Interment will follow at Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery. The family requests donations to Hospice of the Valley , "Sherman House" in lieu of flowers and invites all attendees to a "Celebration of Sarah's life" luncheon immediately following interment.
