“Sammy” was a beloved son, brother, father, grandfather and great-grandfather. He also touched many lives outside of his immediate family, devoting his time to serving the Lord and translating “the word” into Spanish so that others may come to know God.
Born in Union City, California, Sammy was the third oldest of Rudy and Mary’s nine children. And because he was the first boy, he shouldered a lot of responsibility. He was also a good student and really enjoyed learning about history.
When he was 19, Sammy met Micki and the two got married soon after. Together, they had four children, two of whom were born in Louisiana where Sammy was stationed while enlisted in the Air Force.
After serving his country and returning to California, Sammy felt a spiritual calling to Phoenix. It was here that he developed a special connection to the Lord and his church. Sammy also became a mailman, a job he retired from after more than 35 years of service.
In his spare time, you could find Sammy enjoying himself out on the golf course or at a casino. He was also a big fan of the Suns and he liked to watch old movies like his favorite, Singing in the Rain. But most of all, he enjoyed spending time with his family.
Sammy is preceded in death by his father, Rudy. He is survived by his mother, Mary, his four children and their spouses, Sarah Yniguez Whittaker (Matt), Sam (Samantha), Becky Higginbothan (Damien) and Leah Salazar (Andy), his siblings and their spouses, Rachel Casillas (Frank), Ruth, Esther, Bobby (Jody), Martha Flores (Ruben), Elena, Anna and John. He is also survived by 15 grandchildren and 7 great-grandchildren.
