It is with deep sadness that we announce the passing of Rodolfo "Rudy" Pena, 41. Rudy was born in Phoenix, Arizona, named after his grandfather, with the expectation that he would be born on his grandfather’s birthday. He passed away just two weeks shy of reaching 20 years of dedicated service with the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office.
Rudy’s love for law enforcement stemmed from his father’s work as a police officer, and he proudly served in various roles throughout his career. He began his journey as a detention officer trainee in 2005, graduated from academy class #820, and worked in Central Intake, Jail Wagon, and Estrella Jail. Rudy also helped coach high school football and was known for his passion for sports, including football, baseball, and tennis. He played football at Alhambra High School, where he was both a center and linebacker, and was an active member of the tennis team.
Rudy was a devoted father, co-parenting with his former wife, Rosalva Lopez, with whom he maintained a strong and positive relationship. Together, they raised their son, Rudy Pena. Rudy’s heart grew even bigger when he became part of a blended family with his significant other, Arlene Padilla. He loved helping raise her four children—Jesus, Damian, Yanitize, and Daniel—and cherished the time he spent with them, as well as his grandson, John, and the grandchild on the way.
Rudy’s family meant the world to him, including his parents Jose and RoseAnne Pena, grandmother Teresa Pena and his brothers, Jose II (Amanda), Eric (Lisa), and his sister Tammyra (Richie). He was deeply loved by his nieces and nephews, who affectionately referred to him as “Tio Rudy.”
Outside of work, Rudy had a passion for being outdoors. He loved hunting, fishing, camping, and grilling in the backyard. He enjoyed going on road trips with Arlene, exploring new places and making lasting memories. His brothers affectionately nicknamed him "Rudy the Foodie" because of his adventurous palate and love for diverse foods.
Rudy was known for his maturity and sense of responsibility, often taking on the role of the older brother even though he was not the eldest. He was generous, caring, and full of life, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.
Rudy was preceded in death by his grandparents Rodolfo "Rudy" Pena, Johnny and Lydia Paredez. May he rest in peace.
