Michael Anthony Johnson went to be with the Lord on December 22, 2018 in Phoenix, Arizona. He was born to Maurice and Ann Lorraine Johnson on June 21, 1965 in Chicago, Illinois. He moved to Long Beach, California and it quickly became his ‘hood. You could find him at the park chillin’ with the homies or cruisin’ in a Cadillac and bumping Tupac in downtown Long Beach. He was laid back and usually remained cool, calm, and collected - like a true OG. Michael made a home in Phoenix but never forgot about his time in LBC. He enjoyed BBQ, especially chicken and ribs. Of course, he also enjoyed a cool drink on occasion. If he was feeling old school he’d grab an Olde English 800 and on his “classy” days he would choose a Bud Light. He loved sweets and could consume an excessive amount of Honey Buns in one sitting. Michael enjoyed rap music and his favorite rapper was definitely his son Anthony. He was his #1 fan and would say “my boy is famous!” You could often find him in front of the TV enjoying an episode of Cops or a basketball game. He cheered for the LA Lakers first and foremost but eventually welcomed the Phoenix Suns into his heart, as well. Michael could be a fussy man. He was never judgmental and was the kind of man that you could say anything to. As a parent, he was the softee and gladly allowed Regina to be the harsh parent. The kids often went to him first, knowing that he was more likely to say “yes” than mom was. He was more than a father to his children; he was also a true friend to each of them. He taught all 4 of his children to drive. Michael was extremely reliable, often arriving very early to pick people up or for an appointment. He was fiercely protective of his family and watched over them at all times. As a grandfather he continued the tradition of being the softee and handed out money to the grandkids and children when they came to visit. He used to hand out $5 dollar bills but his giving nature increased with inflation and in recent years it was often a $10 or a $20. After he passed away his grandson even said “Papa was a great man, he gave us so much money.” Michael was a very kind and giving man, often putting his family’s needs before his own. He will be missed.
Michael is survived by his Loving Wife - Regina Hawkins, Children - Taneia, Anthony, Tiara, and Ciara Johnson, Grandkids - Jainique Campbell, Tyisheal Campbell, Sanyia Campbell, lil’ Joe Campbell, Nathan Bennett, Elijah Johnson, Arquavian Johnson, LaMyia Stricklen, King Stricklen, Aryana, Brother - Maurice, Sister - Debra, Nephew - Bryant Johnson, Great Nieces - Destini, Dynasti, and Dominique Jackson, Great Nephews - Devin Bunton, Desmine Lee, Devontae Jackson, 6 Great Great Nieces and Nephews, along with a host of family and friends including aunts, uncles, and cousins in Chicago.
