Mary H. Yee (beloved mother of three, grandmother of five, great-grandmother of 11) passed away in Phoenix, AZ on June 11, 2024, at the age of 99 leaving a void her family cannot fill.
Mary Hom was born in San Diego, CA, in 1924 to Goon Hom and Hong Shee Hom, the third of eight children. She graduated from San Diego High School. She was baptized as a child in San Diego and attended the Northwest Chinese Baptist Church in Phoenix, AZ.
Mary met her soon-to-be husband Sing Yee Jr. in San Diego, while he was in the U.S. Navy during WWII. They married in San Diego in 1947 and moved to Phoenix (where he was born and raised) the following year.
Mary joined the workforce after high school during WWII. She continued to work throughout her marriage, first alongside her husband Sing running the Palmdale Market, eventually retiring from the Arizona State Personnel Commission.
Mary was a devoted mother to Gwen Yee Condap (San Leandro, CA), Stephanie A. Yee (deceased), and Allan M. Yee (Phoenix, AZ), who were her pride and joy. Along with her marriage, the birth of her children changed her life for the better; and they felt that in the love and support she provided.
Mary took special joy in cooking (she had a sweet tooth!), bowling, golfing and playing mahjong, enjoying the last two well into her eighties with her many friends. She was an early member of the Arizona Desert Jade Women’s (Service) Club and remained active for decades.
Mary was preceded in death by her parents (Goon Hom and Hong Shee Hom), her husband of 60 years (Sing Yee Jr.), her daughter (Stephanie), and five of her sisters and brothers.
Mary is survived by her daughter (Gwen Yee Condap), son (Allan M. Yee), daughter-in-law (Missy Yee), 5 grandchildren (David M. Yee, Lisa Yee Burgess, Kyle E.M. Yee, Christopher M.Y. Condap, Michele Condap Kopley), two grandchildren by marriage (Brittany Fullmer Sweeney, Derek Fullmer), 11 great-grandchildren, her sister (Amy Hom Yee), her brother (Arthur K. Hom), and many nieces and nephews who will never forget the love she brought to their lives.
A private, family interment will be held the morning of July 13, 2024, at Greenwood Memory Lawn Cemetery, Phoenix, AZ. A memorial service open to all will be held on Saturday, July 13, 2024, at 1:30pm at the Northwest Chinese Baptist Church (4243 W. Greenway Rd, Phoenix, AZ 85053); a reception will follow. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made “In Memory of Mary Yee” to the Northwest Chinese Baptist Church (address above) or via Zelle at giving@nwcbc.org.
