With family at her bedside, Mary Anne Corbell Todd, a native and descendant of pioneer Arizona families, went to sleep in the arms of her Father in Heaven on February 21, 2011. Suffering the abyss that is Alzheimer’s for the last few years, she now rests peacefully awaiting “the sound of trumpets”. Her given name was Mary Anne but her family and friends better knew her as “Monie”. She was born in 1929 at the old Good Samaritan Hospital in Phoenix and was adopted by Victor and Anna Corbell, both being of Tempe pioneer families. She grew up on the Corbell farm in south Tempe, attending Kyrene and Rural Schools and graduating from Tempe High School in 1947. On the campus of Arizona State in 1947, Monie met Douglas Todd, then of Prescott, Arizona and a descendant of the Payne family pioneers of that area. He was the love of her life as she was of his. They married in 1949 and raised five children on the same farm on which she grew up. Monie was a ‘stay at home Mom’, involved in all of the activities of her children, 4-H, FFA, Brownies, Cub Scouts, music and dance lessons, and she often said having children was her greatest blessing. She was active in the Lakeshore Bible Church of God, teaching Sunday school and holding various board offices. She was a 50-year member of PEO and served that organization at the state level as President in 1991 - 1992. She was a constant source of support and counsel for Douglas in his careers, first as a farmer, then later as a state legislator and Maricopa County Treasurer. Monie was predeceased by her parents, Victor and Anna Corbell, and her son, Bradley Glenn. She is survived by Doug, her husband of 62 years, sons Michael (Jenni) of Rancho Palos Verdes, CA; Steve (Melissa) of Tempe, daughters Shelley of Tempe and Christy Kerr (Jerry) of Buckeye; 15 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren. Family visitation will be Thursday evening, 5:30 – 7:30 at the Lakeshore Bible Church of God. Memorial service will be held on Friday at 10:30 at Lakeshore Bible Church, 6415 S. Lakeshore Dr., Tempe, AZ 85283. In lieu of flowers the family suggests contributions be sent to Hospice of the Valley1510 E.
