July 17, 1933 – January 9, 2022
Marion Theresa Humphrey joined our Lord and Savior on Sunday, January 9th, 2022. She is now in Heaven singing with the angels as she always wanted to do!
She was born during the depression and was the eldest child of seven, with 5 sisters, and 1 brother. Her young life was difficult, as she had to help her mother raise her younger siblings, but she didn’t mind this so much because she always loved babies and small children! In her early teens, she began babysitting for a wealthy Doctor’s family and as she started earning her own money, she realized that she could help others in need. This led her on a lifelong journey of serving others while raising her own children, grandchildren, and volunteering to help people all over the world!
Marion met her husband, Ronald, by the grace of God, since she was a Slovak Catholic and he was a German Lutheran. They were married in November 1951. She served as a Stephen Minister, visiting shut-ins to bring food and keep them company. She also served on the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League and volunteered for their numerous events. Ron’s job took them on many journeys all across the globe where she was able to fully utilize all the skills she learned as a Stephen Minister. As a member of LWML she was able to help fulfill their global mission as she volunteered to teach children to read, made quilts, crocheted blankets, made ornaments and Braille books, and sang lullabies to orphaned babies (she said she would always sing longer so the babies would stay awake while she rocked them). Marion often talked about visiting one country where she had an opportunity to help babies and toddlers who were born with cleft palates.
She was also a fabulous cook and often hosted family events like weddings, baptisms, graduations, reunions, holidays, and the weekly Sunday get together. She could often be found in the kitchen canning vegetables from her garden or baking pies, breads, coffee cakes, and cookies for family, friends. She also volunteered to serve at as many church functions as possible. Her favorite memory was serving at a deaf wedding where she and the other volunteers were whispering the entire time they were in the kitchen so they would not disturb the guests! When one couple asked why they were whispering, since most of the wedding party was deaf and could not hear them, all the volunteers laughed until they cried!
Marion is survived by her 5 children, Cheryl, Mark, Sue, Jeff, and Dawn; 13 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; and 2 great, great grandchildren. She will forever be in our hearts!
