Marianne Thiel, age 77, peacefully passed away on Sunday, September 17, 2017, at HonorHealth Deer Valley Medical Center in Phoenix. She was born February 28, 1940 in Berlin, Germany to Margita Schultz and was an only child. She was known by her family and friends as Omi later in life.
She married Erwin “Butch” Thiel on February 24, 1972. They met while Butch was serving in the US Army as an MP, on the base in Berlin where Marianne was also employed. Marianne worked as a civilian employee of the US Army and was very proud that she started paying social security before she ever made the United States her home. Marianne left her family in Germany to move to Minnesota with Butch shortly before they were married. In March of 2005 she moved to Phoenix to be close to her daughter, Nicole.
Family and friends were Omi’s passion and joy. She was known as being a friend to everyone, and dearly loved them all. She enjoyed spending time on Facebook and commenting on her friends post because as she liked to say, “I want to give them a smile for the day”. She also had a deep love for animals; she was known for feeding and caring for all the neighborhood pets. Although she did not care much for TV, watching old game shows and HGTV was a secret passion of hers that not everyone knew. Every night for dinner she was surrounded by the people who mattered most in her life; her family, and most important of all, her granddaughters, Willow and TatTat. Omi will be dearly missed by everyone who knew and loved her. Omi is forever remembered by her daughter, Nicole Thiel Langford and son-in-law, John “Weston” Langford; her granddaughters, Jaidyn “Willow” Langford and Jordyn “TatTat” Winter Langford; and longtime friend Nan Milbrandt. She also leaves behind many beloved neighbors and friends in both Arizona and Minnesota. Marianne was preceded in death by Margita “Oma” Schultz.
A Celebration of Omi’s life will be held at 3:00 pm on Saturday, September 30, 2017 at the Phoenix Memorial Park and Mortuary 200 W. Beardsley Rd., Phoenix, AZ 85027.
