With her life Partner Jose, who helped her raise her children, decided to move to Piñon, Arizona. Years followed, Carmen and Gaspar took their family to Holbrook, Arizona, spending 16 years there. After 24 years of moving, she finally resided in Phoenix, Arizona. Here is where she decided to continue to live out her American dream and became a U.S. citizen. In 2003, thrilled as she could be, she was proud to be an American citizen and vote for the very first time.
Carmen obtained a handful of occupations in her life, which included being: a field harvester, a dishwasher, a waitress, a cook, and a production worker for multiple food companies. She often told her grandchildren stories about her work days before retirement, in hope to inspire good work ethic and respect for all job types. After 6 years of working for Cafe Valley, Carmen ultimately retired.
Having a highly productive lifestyle, Carmen enjoyed making time for her family and herself. When she had time to spare, she spent it watching her childrens’ sports games, and occasionally practiced with them. Carmen expressed her love for her family through food. The family would be ecstatic to see her batches of tamales, pots of sopas, enchiladas and frijoles. Her family knew she appreciated her coffee each day, which was always accompanied by pan dulce. From time to time, she loved to go out and treat herself to breakfast, which is also where she would admire the scenery of the town.
In her downtime, Carmen loved to read magazines and dramatic literature. She also liked to order clothes and accessories from various catalogs. Along with her dramatic literature, she was always delighted to watch and record her Telenovelas. Next to the things she loved, Carmen indulged in all things sweet. Her family encouraged her sweet tooth through numerous gifts, which included Coca-Cola memorabilia. From then on, she collected Coca- Cola bottles, shirts, and knick knacks from all over the world. It was known by her family, Carmen’s guilty pleasure was Fresas con Crema. There was never a time she passed up an opportunity to enjoy any of her sweets. Within all her pastimes, Carmen's ultimate favorite thing to do was to be surrounded and loved by her family and friends.
