Johnny M. Mendez, 77, of Glendale, Arizona, passed away on May 24, 2017. He was born in Hidalgo, New Mexico on January 18, 1940 to Miguel and Sara (Gutierrez) Holguin. Johnny was raised by his aunt, Grace Mendez. Grace was a wonderful mother to Johnny and Johnny loved her dearly. Johnny served in the United States Army receiving an Honorable Discharge in 1957. He also worked as a chef before retiring from the Arizona Republic after many years as a District Advisor for the newspaper.
Johnny was preceded in death by his daughter Rebecca Ann Mendez and stepson Terry Stinnett. He survived by his wife Frances Stinnett of Glendale, AZ; children Elizabeth Zane (Phoenix, AZ) Michele Wharton (Seattle, WA) and Michael Mendez (Phoenix, AZ); step-children Rick Stinnett (Snowflake, AZ) James Stinnett (OK) Patricia Giver (Yuma, AZ) Sheri Wiley (Sutherlin, OR) and John Stinnett (Glendale, AZ). He is also survived by 6 grandchildren and 5 great grandchildren.
Services will be held Wednesday, May 31, 2017 at Resthaven / Carr-Tenney Mortuary & Memorial Gardens, 4310 E. Southern Ave, Phoenix AZ 85042, with visitation 9:00am, funeral at 10:00am, followed by interment with Military Honors. On behalf of Johnny’s family, we thank you for being a part of our loved one’s life and for keeping his memory alive through your fond remembrance of him. Arrangements have been entrusted to Resthaven / Carr-Tenney Mortuary & Memorial Gardens.
