He was born in Pleasant Hill, Ohio on September 12, 1930. John graduated from Newton Local High School in Miami, Ohio in 1948. He was married to the love of his entire life, Bonnie Rae Ehlers, on June 9, 1956.
John was a Lithographer in the printing profession his entire career for McCalls Magazine, Carey Colorgraphic Corp. and American Color Corp.
He loyally served his country in the armed services as a member of the U.S. Navy aboard the USS Orion (1950 - 1954) where he was awarded the National Defense Medal and the Good Conduct Medal, honorably discharged as a Printer’s Apprentice.
He was a dedicated member of the Free and Accepted Masons of Pleasant Hill, Ohio, the American Motorcycle Association of Columbus, Ohio and Bethany Bible Church for many years. He had many passions in his life. Some of which were caring for his loving wife and family, attending dirt track motorcycle races in and around Dayton, Ohio, attending Waylon Jennings shows in Phoenix in the 1960’s with Bonnie, traveling around the U.S. and abroad, taking many excursions into Mexico preparing meals for the high school missionary teams, hiking, fishing, camping, making popcorn and ice cream for Sunday night “dinner” and, later, volunteering, along with Bonnie, in the church coffee lounge.
John was preceded in death by his wife of 65 years, Bonnie Rae, (whom he selflessly did everything for after her stroke, for 9 years), his mother, Hilda Justine Miller (Grove), his father, Robert Lee Furlong, his brother, Roger Allen Furlong (Phyllis) and grandson, Adam Lee Furlong.
He is survived by his sister Judy Elizabeth Hyde, daughters Melinda Sue Kraisinski and Jayne Ellen Venard, sons Robert Willis Furlong (Veronica) and David Joseph Furlong (Jennie), ten grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren.
His family would like to acknowledge Orchard Point Assisted Living care facility and especially Rose Villa Assisted Living Home, where John received the utmost personal care and attention from Monica and one of his best friends, Carol.
