Joan Marie Scott (Gray) born May 28th, 1941 passed away in Phoenix, Arizona on August 10th, 2021 peacefully surrounded by the love of her family after a long and courageous health battle. Joan was born in Providence, Rhode Island to Benjamin and Effie Gray. She is preceded in death by her husband Lawrence, her brother Richard, and her parents. Joan is survived by her three children all of Phoenix, Lance (Jane), Amy, and James (Stephanie). The love of her life, her grandchildren Andrew, Amber, Megan, Jacob, Molly, Madison, and Nicholas and her great-grandson Ryden.
When Joan was young the family moved from Providence to Norwich, CT to be closer with family. She graduated from the Norwich Free Academy, and Lyndon State College with a bachelor’s degree in Education. She taught 3rd grade at Bishop Elementary. It was in Norwich she met her future husband Lawrence, who was stationed at the Naval base in Groton. They wed in 1966 after a four-month courtship, that started with a first date of burgers and grading papers. They remained married until his death in 1995. The family eventually moved to New York where Joan was able to be a stay-at-home mom and master her expert level cookie baking skills. To be closer to family they moved to Phoenix in the 80’s, and Joan became an Assistant Administrator for a care facility. Upon her retirement she was excited to be just grandma for all of her grandchildren. She taught them to bake, crochet, conducted science experiments, and hosted weekly sleepovers. Joan was a talented baker, loved to crochet, and could complete a table puzzle in record time. Her most amazing accomplishment though was being an amazing mother and grandmother who always showed unconditional love. May you rest in peace, you are loved and already missed. A private family service will be held. In lieu of flowers the family request of donations be made to Habitat for Humanity Arizona in memory of Joan Scott.
