Joan L. Knowlton, 64, passed away at her home in Sun City surrounded by her husband, daughter and son on September 18, 2018. Joan was born September 13, 1954, in Huntington Park, CA to Dwight H. Conner and Ruth E. Conner (Dent). She graduated from Southgate High School in 1972 and proceeded to attend Woodbury University, finishing with a degree in Accounting in 1975. After raising her children, Joan went on to obtain her teaching credential from Cal State Los Angeles and a Master’s of Education from Cambridge College in 2007. She taught fifth grade for ten years at Pedley Elementary School then moved to first grade at Indian Hills Elementary School in Jurupa Valley, CA. In her career, Joan served on many different committees to better the educational opportunities of her students. She retired from teaching in 2017 and moved with her husband to Sun City, AZ. Joan possessed the gift of gab and had many valued friendships throughout her life. More importantly, she always provided sage advice to family, friends, colleagues and neighbors. She loved sewing and crafted every one of her children’s Halloween costumes while they were growing up. She loved reading, especially romance novels. Joan also had a fascination with celebrity gossip and reality television. Some of her most treasured trips were taken with family and friends to Hawaii, Europe, and the Caribbean. Camping was a family pastime for many years while Joan’s children were young. She also loved flamingos, so much so that she and her siblings were dubbed the "Flamingo Sisters". One thing that was evident was that there was never a dessert that Joan did not love, especially brownies! Joan is survived by her husband of 42 years, Andy Knowlton, her daughter and son-in-law, Kim and Dylon Knowlton-Rau, her son and daughter-in-law, Brian and Cindy Knowlton, her first grandchild, Blake Knowlton as well as her two sisters, Gail Hinds (Frank) and Lynn Davis (Boyd), along with many nieces and nephews. Joan will be dearly missed by those who loved her and will remain in their hearts forever. There will be a Celebration of Life in Joan’s honor held Saturday, September 29th, at 1pm, at Palmbrook Country Club, 9350 W. Greenway Road, Sun City, AZ. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made to either Pedley Elementary PTO or Indian Hills Elementary PTA in Jurupa Valley, CA.
