Janet Fountain, 74, of Mesa, Arizona passed from this world on Tuesday, May 21 after a brief battle with cancer. Born July 31, 1944 in Jackson, Michigan to Andrew and Louise Chroninger, Janet moved to Kearny, Arizona as a teen graduating from Ray High School. While in high school she was a Bearcat Drum Majorette and Kearny’s first Pioneer Day Queen.
She married Richard Fountain in Tempe, Arizona on January 31, 1965 and later had two daughters Michelle and Nicole Fountain. Janet and Richard lived primarily in Petaluma, California. They divorced in 1994 whereupon Janet returned to Arizona, settling in Mesa.
Janet had a number of different administrative assistant positions in her career and also worked for a number of years as a hairdresser. In 2012 she retired from her position as a collector for Unicorn Financial in Mesa.
Known for her love of dogs, Janet often had several and spent several years working with a California-based greyhound rescue organization that found homes for the dogs after their career on the racetracks.
Janet was a consummate volunteer running the Christmas Bazaar fundraiser for her daughter’s school, delivering meals to those in need, and even driving people to medical appointments. While in California, she hosted several Japanese Exchange Students forming strong bonds in a short stay that always resulted in tearful goodbyes.
Janet is survived by her daughter Nicole Fountain of Fremont, California, Michelle Fountain of Rutland, Vermont and grandsons Jordan Fields of Lyme, New Hampshire and Zane Fields of Wilder, Vermont. In addition, she is survived by her siblings Bill Chroninger and his wife Crystal of Rio Rancho, New Mexico; Dennis Chroninger and his wife Francis of Globe, Arizona; Linda Wheeler and her husband Bruce of White Rock, New Mexico and Sandy Mansfield and her husband Carson of Mesa, Arizona in addition to numerous well-loved nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. She was predeceased by her parents.
The family will hold a private celebration of life. Donations in Janet’s memory can be made to the American Cancer Society.
